Just going by retail, the Maverick chinese made compact tractor is about 1/2 the price of a Cub Cadet, has a larger c.i. engine, but is 2 not 2 cyl. Also the package deals: trailer, mower, box grader and 244 4x4 hp more that 20, is about $10,000. Are they reliable? Are they ergonometrically sound, quality...? thanks, Greg

Consensus on Chinese tractors in general is as follows (your mileage may vary, but probably not by much):

Apparent value: Excellent
Fit and finish: Poor
After sale support: Poor
Ergonomics: Poor
Reliability: Inconsistent
Parts availability: Poor
Resale value: Poor

Caveat emptor.

Chinese made JUNK. You get what you pay for. plain & simple
Ken is 100% on the money except for fit & finish, which sucks also. ....

I would not depend on anyone who uses the word "suck" in their reply. It's most likely a JD dealer and he is feeling the heat from more economical tractors. Listen to people who have owned one. ....

Greg,

If you are near the Maverick dealership, it would be worthwhile to stop bye and see the tractors. Mike Stuart will give you the straight info. He openly provides information on the CTOA board, that other dealers wouldn't and don't. He has helped and assisted me with my tractor that was not purchased from him.

I was reading the survey results and was intrigued at the forgiving nature of the Chinese tractor owner. I counted 4 broken steering knuckles/arms, but there was only one real complainer in the bunch. Those 4 broken steering parts seemed to be the most serious problems and there where a great number of smaller problems. Even if I saved 50% by purchasing a Chinese tractor instead of a domestic brand, I would expect a little better quality than what is being portrayed by this small sample on this survey.

Just to clarify, the Maverick tractor is not a Jinma tractor. Its design may have originated from similar origins, but don't assume it shares the same issues as a Jinma. Mike does carry a very good stock of Jinma parts, though. He is a straight-up and honest guy. He won't sell you what you don't need.

The issue with the Jinma steering arm is well known. It is primarily an issue with FEL mounted tractors. ie. the extra weight and making the power steering force the wheels around without moving the tractor. It is also an easy fix and a relatively low-cost part. Newer designs have moved the cylinder to the front axle, like the 304 and 354.

The Jinma is a good value for a DIYer that doesn't want to spend the cash on a big 3 tractor, for only a few hundred hours of use, per year. The whole purpose of my website is to provide such info for people can decide on if its OK for them, or not. In your case, it is not, and thats OK, too.

I have visited Maverick Tractors in Memphis and talked to Mike Stuart on seveal occasions. Although I probably will not buy a Maverick tractor, I want to put in a good word for Mike. Mike has a mechanical engineering degree and once worked for a US tractor company. He is honest and knows his stuff. For the non-commercial tractor user, I think Mike's Maverick tractors offer alot of value. If you have problems, Mike knows his tractors inside and out. He says most problems can be taken care of by the owner, and I believe him. If a Maverick tractor meets your needs, you can't go wrong in dealing with Mike Stuart. Just my 2 cents. ....
