Checking out at the store, the young cashier suggested to the much older lady that she should bring her own grocery bags, because plastic bags are not good for the environment,.

The woman apologized to the young girl and explained, "We didn't have this 'green thing' back in my earlier days."

The young clerk responded, "That's our problem today. Your generation did not care enough to save our environment for future generations.

The woman apologized to the young girl and explained, "We didn't have this 'green thing' back in my earlier days."

The older lady said that she was right our generation didn't have the "green thing" in its day. The older lady went on toexplain: Back then, we returned milk bottles, soda bottles and beer bottles to the store. The store sent them back to the plant to be washed and sterilized and refilled, so it could use the same bottles over and over. So they really were recycled.

But we didn't have the "green thing" back in our day. Grocery stores bagged our groceries in brown paper bags that we reused for numerous things. Most memorable besides household garbage bags was the use of brown paper bags as book covers for our school books.

But, too bad we didn't do the "green thing" back then. We walked to the grocery store and didn't climb into a 300-horsepower machine every time we had to go two blocks. But she was right. We didn't have the "green thing" in our day.

Back then we washed the baby's diapers because we didn't have the throw away kind. We dried clothes on a line, not in an energy-gobbling machine burning up 220 volts. Wind and solar power really did dry our clothes back in our early days.
Kids got hand-me-down clothes from their brothers or sisters, not always brand-new clothing. But that young lady is right; we didn't have the "green thing" back in our day.

Back then we had one TV, or radio, in the house -- not a TV in every room. And the TV had a small screen the size of a handkerchief (remember them?), not a screen the size of the state of Montana.

In the kitchen we blended and stirred by hand because we didn't have electric machines to do everything for us.

Back then, we didn't fire up an engine and burn gasoline just to cut the lawn. We used a push mower that ran on human power.

We exercised by working so we didn't need to go to a health club to run on treadmills that operate on electricity. But she's right; we didn't have the "green thing" back then.

Back then, people took the streetcar or a bus and kids rode their bikes to school or walked instead of turning their moms into a 24-hour taxi service in the family's $45,000 SUV or van, which cost what a whole house did before the "green thing."
We had one electrical outlet in a room, not an entire bank of sockets to power a dozen appliances. And we didn't need a computerized gadget to receive a signal beamed from satellites 23,000 miles out in space in order to find the nearest burger joint.

But isn't it sad the current generation laments how wasteful we old folks were just because we didn't have the "green thing" back then?

In the 50's when dad bought our first TV, it cost more than $300 which is over $3,000 in todays money while using 280 watts. I now have this computer, a 30" monitor, scanner, phone charging, and 6 disk drives on this circuit drawing 53.2 watts. We used 100 watt bulbs while my LED equivalents now use 7.5 watts for equivalent lighting. Our '57 Chev V-8 got less than 15 mpg while our current car averages over 35. Back then we got by with fewer items but they used a lot more energy than today's equivalents. ....

Jerry totally agree with your post. We are not only a throw away society in bags but machines and yes unborn babies. For the vast majority even the Federal Politicians cared about our county regardless their party. At least in my part of the South there was much less race tension that we have had in last few years.

As to how energy efficient autos, tv and lights are today compared to the 50's...yep per each they are more efficient but that came about due to industry working to build a better product to increase their sales and market share. I first TV was not till the mid or late 60's. I am a 53 model baby fyi, fourth of five with oldest 14 years older. So the light bulb was 100 watts, OK. LED use less power but cost much more. Nope have not found their lift to be near what the companies say they will. For me totally cost is no better. Also grew up with cows mowing our yard and then first gas mower and only one for years was a push mower. Wow, we may have used 1/2 of gas to mow our yard, about 1/2 of grass. Now it takes me about 4 gallons to mow my 2 1/2 acres of yard and no excise. As to the autos, without a doubt the engines are more efficient but lord don't bump a rabbit! There was more metal in the dash of a 54 Ford than there is in my Honda CRV.

However, the good news is: it looks like the Federal Government is working hard to help us go back to some of those good ole days. Like now the white house wants us to pay for sexually reassignment surgery for 10 yes ten year olds. Maybe just maybe those so called leaders need reassignment surgery.

Nope not meant to be funny, just reality. ....

KT, Back in 1979 I cursed President Jimmy Carter's speech on how Car manufacturers had to make cars with what seeemd to be TOTALLY unreachable mpg of over 20 miles per gallon and above. Heck my muscle car got 10mpg ! So I do agree that the car manufacturers did a crazy great job of making cars more efficient and a by product of tighter emissions made them more maintainence free, no more points and condensers, tighter longer lasting engines. JUST THEY WERE COERCED, they were fat and happy with cars that needed a quart of oil every 1000 miles and required tuneups and frequent repairs. I am old enough to remember that every gas station used to stock oil cans right next to the pump, and the attendant would check the oil at the gas pump as it probably was low !

As someone who does his own suto mechanics I hated to admit that Ole Jimmy Carter was damn right and we own him great respect for his visonary thinking that we all are benefiting from now. ....

I noticed at Walmart that the Greeter now is practicing matching receipts to items in the cart as you exit the store. I guess it is in anticipation of customers self checking out bagless in their cart. Sounds like a night mare. Thinkin of the long lines at Costco which is bagless. Always thought of a bgged item as proff of purchase of sorts. ....

Starbucks is planning to phase out its ionic paper coffee cups by the end of 2023, customers will be able to use their own cups in the US and Canada. The company is trying different programs in different countries. For example, the “Borrow a Cup” program allows customers to drink their coffee and return the cup to a designated Starbucks store, where it will be professionally cleaned and reused by other customers. ....

First, I doubt that was a president's idea just what he decided to promote which is nothing wrong with. It is a wise person who recognizes something important that is not their idea.

Not trying to cause a war here but was it the pressure of DC or of the Japanese auto makers that really push Detroit? I know I never considered a Japanese auto and seldom saw one on the roads till then.

As to pickups, I bought a 1974 ford pickup with V-8 new and it would get up to about 18 mpg. Best of conditions granted. Now my 2019 Ford with a V-6 and more hp and four wheel drive averages about 19.6 for me. Not a whole lot of mpg improvement there. I believe you will find the fuel injector system is what has given possibly the biggest mpg boost. I do agree the engines are built better with better materials and last longer but cost a ton more when there is repair needed. Gone are the days of the shade tree mechanic. Even on new tractors. One point on the mpg boost we often forget is the weight of the older vehicles compared to the NONE steel vehicles on the road and again with a large increase in repairs if not totaled with wrecks that those vehicles would have survived. Hey almost forgot how large cars use to be as were pickups. Doubt many people realize how small they are compared to the 70s were. Mini van may not hold as many as the old full size car did. lol the front seat was a couch!

I do believe DC is who pushed seatbelts and airbags, which has increase safety.

Yes there have been some very great improvements in autos and tractors. All it cost is many times the price to buy or repair.

Very seldom is a change only all good or all bad. ....

KThompson,

Many excellent points. You brought me back to the old days when the family of 6 would pile into an old 6 seat double bench, Ford sedan for a vacation. Man it weighed a couple of tons :). No AC no PS but a V8. My grandfather was a house painter and the rocker panels had rusted out in only 3 years, he filled it with something you use on house painting and painted it with a brush , he would say when anyone noticed the brush strokes, HEY ITS ONLY TEMPORARY, he was so right !!

Harry ....

Been 5 months since the Plastic bag ban. When it first stated I would see customers carrying their bags from the car to the store.

Now I see most customers just use the shopping cart and do the bagging or crating at their car, makes it alot simpler.

Just not so good if its raining :-( ....

If we all only bought on line the rain, bags of any type, crazy shoppers and such would not worry us. I am not that shopper.

Now what I know about me and marketing: they say never go grocery shopping when hungry. If I am not hungry nothing looks good, so I buy almost nothing and I mean almost nothing. If I were to only shop for food on line I would forget there are real coconuts, not realize there is fresh watermelons or peaches in and thus not buy them, would not realize there is a new brand of razor and thus would not consider buying them. I think the same would be said for many of the items in the auto parts stores. I mean look at all the items they have I cannot live without! But If I don't venture into dream land would not know how much I needed those goodies!

Next thing I would notice is I was spending less on gas and car wear. Would have more free time to cut grass, watch tv, visit friends, play with tractor and yes saving money for as time goes on would know less and less of all the NEW gadgets out there now which I really need for my car which now I seldom drive.

Think on it. ....
