Hi guy’s new here and thanks for letting me join this forum.

I recently purchased a used Kubota B1750 for using on my property. I am trying to fix a few issues with the tractor and one is I am getting hydraulic fluid pumping out of the top of my steering column.

I removed the steering wheel and the oil seal has a gap on one side that the wire retaking spring isn’t closing up. Read a few threads and I have a couple of questions.

Is the steering tube suppose to have fluid in it? Some of the threads I have read say it is not the upper seal leaking it is actually a seal in the bottom.

If it is the upper seal I need to replace, does the bushing on top of the tube screw out or is it pressed in? Seems it has to be removed to change the seal.

Any advise would greatly be appreciated. I am mechanically inclined but never done much work on a tractor.

Strangely enough with all the Kubota's I've had I've never had one leak there.

I have however had older Ford's leak at the steering column, it's a very common issue with them.

If the design is similar the upper seal is not meant to hold back hydraulic fluid, it's just there as a dust barrier. The leak is fluid getting past the lower seal at the steering box and filling the tube until it spills out the top. On a Ford the preferred solution is to remove the sheet metal, undo the 4 top bolts and slide the top plate up the (VERY well cleaned shaft) enough that you can get to the 'collar' 9the source of the leak) worn into the shaft over time. Fill the groove with JB Weld (must be the Marine version) and then sand it back to smooth with emery cloth. Most people just slide the old seal back down and reassemble it. It's not a particularly high pressure system.

Best of luck. ....

Thanks for reply Murf. Broke into it and sure enough the lower seal was bad. Fortunately the shaft looks great so should have no issue there. Parts are ordered so hopefully my issue will be fixed. Again thanks for the reply. ....
