Should you change the oil in your tractor every year even if the hours are really low. I use synthetic oil it should last for multiple years if I only put on less than 100 hours a year. But I change it every season is that excessive. I also change the filter of course what are you guys doing

My Bx2200 manual says every 100 hours and filter change every 200. That being said, It probably will not harm it to go a bit more, but it is an easy process, and not that expensive. I like sooner better than later. ....

A lot of it has to do with your location. In colder areas the condensation often will kill the oil before the engine will. ....

As Art says condensation can be an issue in colder climates. it also is an issue where the tractor is run for short periods of time before warming up.

It also depends on how dusty things are, and whether you are running it hard as in full throttle usage.

I think if you are putting on low hours, less than 100 per year you should change it annually anyway. Why spend $25000 on equipment and not do the most rudimentary and cheap maintenance of $30 per year? ....

If you are not running AG tractors and making multiple oil changes per year...then you make the annual oil change no matter how few hours you put on your machine...Like Art White said...condensation in your oil is NOT good...:) ....

I use oil analysis quite a bit in most of our tractors. I do a lot of oil changes well past 1000 hours. The tractors we use for tillage work usually get changed around 400-600 hours. We use a cheap generic 15w-40 oil that's about $6 a gallon. ....

He did say "... cheap generic 15w-40 oil that's about $6 a gallon."

Without even getting into sales or discounts cheap stuff at TSC is only $7.6 / gallon in 5 gallon pails.

Best of luck. ....

I am so used to buyng pricey synthetic oil where I buy only 5 quarts not gallons for $27 that $6 for 4 quarts just seemed crazy low. Have not used dinosaur oil in 30 years at least.

The original poster is obviously in a whole other zone than me in using serious equipment rather than a Tractor avocation guy like me.

For my light use I cannot afford ;-( to use Dino oil and will continue using the premium stuff though who really knows if it matters at all. Probably more marketiing than reality.

My local TSC has their brand 15 w 40 Dino Travelors 5 Gallons for $40 (8/gal) so thanks for the price reality check Murf. ....

I'm at the other end of the spectrum, we buy oils in large enough quantities that it's delivered by bulk tank truck and pumped into our shop tank. Both motor oil and several grades of hydraulic fluids, including generic Super UDT. The same is true of filters, when our order comes in it is on a pallet, sometimes more than one pallet.

Synthetic is not something we're interested in, or spending the extra money on.

An oil and hyd. fluid change isn't cheap, when you're doing dozens of machines, often more than once a month each, it really adds up fast.

Best of luck. ....
