What Man Put Together Man Can Take Apart

The 2005 Cub Cadet Model 6284 and maybe others should have been engineered better to make it more reliable. Take the drive shaft on the 4WD model. It is a poor design from the get go. It's not even balance to prevent the vibrations at startup and during the increase RPMs. They claim...Cub Cadet that this is not a repairable unit. Well!... "what man put together, man can take apart"
And that is what I'm doing. Remove the 'U-Joints" and replace with new ones and have the company here that does drive-lines to balance the unit with the new U-joints. When it's all said and done, this tractor will be free of the vibrations, and will hum as a tune.

After inspecting the drive shaft, found the two "Isolators disc" have the bolt holes worn so bad that they no longer are coming into play. The Cud Cadet 6284 parts list show there is a "fix".. Part no.759-04059 Flex Drive Shaft coupler kit. at a very low price of $172.92. Now, just what does that consists of...couple Isolators disc and 6 bolts and nuts? The Service manual says. the engine has to be moved a few inches...forward to get the drive shaft off. Cadet should have designed the tractor like automobiles....drive shaft can be removed by removing a couple bolts. Now we all know why it being said that the Cub Cadet is the most expensive compact tractor that was made. ....

No plan for reasonable replacement.

Is the wear and vibration so bad that you have no choice? ....

So I was running wires for some work lights I put on my 6284. I took the access cover off on the operator platform and find the drive axel. The vibration coupler is missing a nut on one of the bolts and a couple were a bit loose. Odd thing was a few months earlier I found this odd washer in the garage where the tractor is parked...it was from that connector. ....

Some factory person made a mistake and decided to add some isolators and a few washers to take up the "slack" in the shaft? That what my first thought was when I open up the center cover on my 6284. If I was engineering this drive shaft, I would cut splines(shaft groves) on each end of the two-piece shaft, add a over size coupler and than bolt the two together to make a better balance drive train. The way Cub Cadet did this one, you have to move the engine forward couple inches to remove the whole assembly from the flywheel and the transmission to replace the isolators. One bad design in my book. ....

When I saw it I thought of this post. I looked a bit at it and thought it was not the most elegant design for sure. Plus the fact that one nut fell off and a few other were loose. I have to be honest in that I have not looked at a different version before this, so I am not sure how others are put together. ....

Did you get your drive shaft fixed?

I know it has been a while since your last post but wondering here, what the odds are of finding a suitable shaft or having one made that would slide together for replacment.

Then cut the old into to remove. ....

Does the engine have to move forward? The shaft is not split at the flex joint connection? Mine had a nut and washer missing replaced them, but would be willing to replace whole flex coupler if I do not have to loosen engine.

If this is the fact, what a flawed design.the unit has some vibration, but maybe not enough to warrant that amount of work. With the design of 2 universal joints and the flex coupler and no visible balance points,I am surprised it runs as smooth as it does! ....

Did you go forward with you plan to modify the drive shaft. If so, how did it work out? What did it cost you and do you have any pictures? I am looking to replace my flex coupler but after seeing your post I tend to agree that there has to be a better way.
