I have an older John Deere 403 rough mower about 5 ft cut with two very dull blades that I need to remove and put on new mower blades -=My question is best way of removing old rough mower blades - I see square access panels to the blades on the top of the mower deck - Do I use a socket wrench from the top square access panel to break large nut on top of two blades loose looks like about 1 1/4 in nut or bigger and how to keep blade from spinning while loosening the nut and how to install new blades ? thanx

You will need a 3/4" Johnson bar, and extension, a socket and a couple of feel of pipe.
Check that there's no cotter pin through the nut, if there is, remove it and if you can, clean up the threads a little with a wire brush.
Then stick the socket and extension down though the access hole and onto the nut and using the side of the case as a fulcrum turn the nut loose, using the pipe over the end of the Johnson bar if necessary.
If that doesn't work, or you just don't want to try, take the unit to a tire shop. They have monstrous impact guns. The kind that either break the nut free, or bust the bolt off for you.
Best of luck. ....

another question on changing big blades on jd 403 rough mower - Will I need to a wedge between the blade and the side of the deck to keep the blade from spinning when I put the socket and the cheater bar on the nut to break it loose ? thanx for your replies- I assume that it is better to remove the blade and either get new blades or send it through the bench grinder rather than bracing the mower and leaving the blade on the mower deck and trying to sharpen it while being left on the mower deck-thanx again ....

Unless your mower is one designed to be tilted by hyd know of no way to be safe and have the deck in a position to sharpen the blades. Normally you replace the blades. ....

If your mower has the access port on top just the extension will be enough block once it butts up to the side of the opening.
The blades on a rough mower like this pivot to prevent damage if they hit something. There is no way to block the blade like on a lawn mower since the fixed portion is usually about 18" away from the case.
I have seen people put a bar through the U joint and block it against the case but that;'s a pretty sketchy way to do it IMHO.
Best of luck. ....
