John Deere 4310 4DW not working

I recently lost four wheel drive on my 4310. I took it to the local dealer and they said that a gear spline is stripped and the front end needs to come off in order to make the repair. Bottom line.. $3,000 to fix it. Maybe that is high, maybe it isn't. In any case, it's more money than I have to spend right now. Im trying to decide whether to take this on myself or not. My mechanical skills are ok, but I haven't worked on tractors. So... using the limited information I have provided, can anyone advise on my course of action? Thanks!!

I have not messed with John Deer. The guy I buy hay from pretty much said that everything to fix his JD is $3,000.
I would suggest getting a Service manual and a parts manual. Then decide for yourself.
The main issue with JD is that the new tractors have solenoids buried inside and will not show anyone how to get to them.
This one being 2002-04 (or so) may be much simpler.
It also could be something really simple that you could knock out in an hour. ....

Parts breakdown indicates its not complex but the front of the tractor needs to be supported to remove the axle. If only the couplings and possibly drive shaft are involved, the repair is then as simple as replacing 2 couplers, 2 roll pins, and the drive shaft, then reassembling. But if either the front diff shaft splined is ruined, the repair becomes major as does a transmission output spline replacement. I've replaced on Kubotas due to owner not greasing the front axle pivot so it wore, caused the front axle to misaligned. It damaged both the shaft and couplers but axle input shaft was okay. Expensive repair was finding a machine shop to rebuild the worn axle housing. In your case the repair will be straight forward but determining why the splines wore and correcting it could be $$$. ....

Have you verified for yourself the problem is the splines? I mentioned having repaired a driveshaft problem a couple times. One was damaged splines - the tractor would clunk as you drove along on loose gravel as the spline coupler would jump from one set of splines on the shaft to the other. The other one had the roll pin that holds the coupler in place shear and the coupler walked off. This is a problem I have read about from many users of multiple tractor brands. I had this happen on one of my tractors, one with electric front wheel engage. I was in heavy tillage, got stuck in what I should have easily gone through, looked at my fronts and they were not turning. This tractor had a drive shaft cover like our 2 large John Deeres. Slid the cover back and found the coupler had walked back. Problem is when I tried to slide the coupler forward I could not get the splines to align - there was a 1/4" offset. Turns out it was a factory assembly error so the dealer took it back, replaced all the driveline parts, and its been trouble free ever since. We had that happen on one of our John Deeres, I can't remember which one but larger than CUT, and it just needed reassembly. No axle removal or anything. ....

Thanks for your responses. I guess i will get more detail from the dealer on what they found. I am assuming the part breakdown is my own fault due to running the tractor in 4wd too often in conditions when it wasn't necessary. I am not getting any error codes as I had them disconnect the linkage so that 4wd remains off in the event that I accidentally hit the switch.

It is best not to engage the 4WD unless you actually need it as when it is engaged, there will be a certain amount of drive-train binding depending upon the type of surface you are operating on, especially pavement which is VERY hard on the drive-train.

Hopefully it is just the front drive-shaft coupling teeth are stripped. If it is something else, start limbering up that wallet.

Both of my Hall Effect sensors have gone bad on mine. I replaced the sensor on the bell housing but the other one on the left side of the transmission will have to wait as it sets below the transmission fluid level and oil will pour out when I remove it. ....

my 2003 L3130 GST has always been in 4WD except when traveling on hard packed roads. there are certain things that ya should not do in 4WD--like pulling hard in reverse. I have had no problem in 15 years with the tractor. Hope all's well on Christmas Day. ....
