For awhile my turning was very difficult. My tractor set for a few months while I got the starter worked on. I went to drive the tractor and the steering wheel would just spin. I took the cap off the steering wheel and ensured the gears were connected. Im not sure if it is the pump that is out or if there is a linkage issue. Can anyone help point me to what needs worked on now. Thanks

The steering really isn't that complex a system on these tractors but it could be quite a few things. Also the tractor could have hydrostatic or power steering. Which system do you have? ....

I'm not a 100%. From what I have read in my manual and seen from other 1981 Long 510s I am assuming it is hydrostatic pump system. It was very difficult to turn and the radius was terrible. I would have to almost stop or go slow and really forcibly turn the wheel so I can complete the turn radius. I took the wheel cover off to eliminate that. Now I am stumped. ....

I have a Long 350 so it may be different. For my tractor, there is a reservior under the hood on the left hand side that houses the hydraulic fluid for the power steering. If you have this, check the level to see if you may be low on fluid. ....

the 510 manual does not show that reservior. Thats why I am wondering if the pump can go bad or it may be as you said low on fluid. In which case would the low fluid slowly make the steering go out? ....

I had to replace the starter on my tractor and had to remove some things to get it out. This was exacerbated because of the front end loader I have on it. Thre was a plate that I had to remove and it leaked some hydraulic fluid out when removed. It turned out that it was from the power steering system. The wheels would not turn until I had refilled the fluid. ....

Funny you mention that. I had done the same thing. That starter was in a bad spot! I had bought a new one and the housing was different so it would not fit. I had to have the old one rebuilt. I bet that is the same problem I am having. Did you use power steering fluid or 305 Hydraulic fluid. Where did you fill it in? I know down by the shifter there is the hydraulic reservoir that I fill up, but perhaps I need to fill directly to the system as you did?

I bet that is exactly my problem. ....

Page 170 (172 page number)of the PDF count for Steering.
Page 181 (177 page number) shows the Resevior.

Agco Parts book, click on guest, search for Allis 5040 and 5050, similar but not the same as long. you can see the diagrams though. Some parts interchange.

The valve had fluid in it. I may need to try and bleed air out of the line. That is my next task. I havent been able to work on it as much as I hoped. I am in the Army Reserve and had to do my 2 week annual training. I am also going to check linkage since the valve has hydraulic fluid in it. I will be sure to post again. ....

two items first thank you for your service and second can you see the fluid? if you can see it check how it looks now and pay attention to how the steering works. If it works then when it acts up check how it looks. See if it looks milky or has air bubbles in it. If air is being mixed in the fluid it really affects the steering and water in it can also as the water may turn to steam. kt ....

It is clear fluid. I know what you mean about milky because that is how the fluid looks when I use my loader or PTO. I had a leak on a hose and my dad told me that hydraulic fluid looks like that when it gets worked. ....

When have you changed the hyd oil? Being milky is a good indication of water in it. If you check it before starting up and it does not look milky but does after running it the water is settling out and to the bottom of the oil then being mixed back into it. If you can drain the oil without all coming out you may be able to remove the oil without a full drain.

I think you will find some post here on issue with Long on this due to the failure of seal around gear shift levers. My brother has same issue with his Long. kt ....

Here is a link to a thread I started.
Hydraulic Stuff, lessons learned.
Please add your lessons to it.

http://tractorpoint.com/cgi-bin/tractorreview/fullThread.pl?parentnum=191996&catname=Tractor+Engine+Repair+Rebuild&catcode=MR#191997

One thing I found on my Long was that there was a pin hole in the Hydraulic pickup line where the rubber hose connected the pickup tube to the filter housing.
I could not figure out why my oil kept looking like it has water in it.
I ended up just putting about half a quart in a glass jar and sealing the lid. I marked the level with a sharpie.
left over night, the milky color left and the level dropped about 1/2 inch. not water, air. I found the hole and replace the hose with fuel transfer hose. I also found sharp edges on the pick up tube that caused the pin hole.
no leaks because the hole was on top.
....
