First problem I've had with my new toy. The shaft that moves the bucket, bent while I was pulling a stump out of it's hole. I had already dug around the stump and broken all of the big roots and most of the smaller roots. While using the boom, dipper and bucket to lift the stump out of its hole, thats when the shaft bent. Should this have happened? Aren't these shafts built to withstand their own force? All is still under warranty, should this be covered? David

DSG: Not a good thing to happen. Like you, I expect designs to be adequate for machines to protect themselves, unless maybe there was a lack of stability and the tractor weight shifted while the curl valve was closed. I know that I stall the curl on my hoe sometimes during ordinary digging, and I'd be surprised if the hoe was damaged. I guess another possibility is that the tractor has abnormally high hydraulic pressure.I think that warranty coverage could be a problem. Many dealers might think of the situation as resulting from abuse. Fortunately, if the shaft that was bent is a hydraulic cylinder, a replacement cylinder shouldn't be too expensive.Note: I'm posting this as a new message. I can't get a reply to post properly. ....

I bent the same shaft on my #7 backhoe when it was new. I removed the cylinder and took it to my JD dealer who gave a replacement cylinder. he took the cylinder off of a new #7 BH on the lot. There was "no Charge".

I suspect the shaft was not prperly heat treated during the manufacturing process. Therefore, the metalurgical properties of shaft did not meet the material specification requirements. i.e. the shaft is weak "soft".

Good luck,

Tony ....

Another think that can cause a shaft to bend is the fluid being hyper-aerated. This can be caused by a small internal crack in the hydraulic pump or in the pick up in the transmission. The air being mixed with the fluid will cause the relief valve to mal-function. When this happens, the backhoe will get to much pressure.

I had the exact same thing happen. After only 27 hours on my 2001 JD4300 with 48 backhoe. The dealer told me it was an operator error and sent me a bill for $270 for a replacement piston. I am also having problems with the rear end differential. All teeth snapped off the spur gears. In short, I am rather disappointed with this nifty machine. It does not seem to have the durability I was expecting with the John Deere name.

Frans, don't allow your dealer to get away with that. I'm not the only one who had it happen and fixed under warranty. Talk with Anthony M. Parente, he had the same problem with the BH and is having problems with the Hydro in reverse. If we owners stay informed with eachother the Dealers and JD can't bullshit us.

Frans,
I have used my 48 backhoe on the heavier 4700 without any problems so far.
The piston shaft which bent on my #7 backhoe was replaced by the dealer under warranty. The shaft was soft.
You should insist that your shaft be covered under warranty. Call customer service at 1-800-537-8233, then press 1, pause, then press 4.
The pressure relief valve setting should be checked to make sure it is within the specified limits. Please keep us advised.

In reply to the problems with the rear diff...Yanmar only makes the 4100 for John Deere now all the others just use the Yanmar Engine(gotta protect my favorite brand). The 4200 up are made here in the good old USA....makes ya proud don't it!! I get to work first hand with this "new"(never thought I'd say that) Generation of workers...."Made in the USA" may be something that will be looked at as lesser quality in the future! Scary! I've noticed more and more businesses don't seem to care if the customer is happy or not either. Times are getting tougher though, maybe things will turn around.

Let's not get carried away with "Made in the USA". Current federal law says a manufacturer can state "made in the USA" if 70% of product is ASSEMBLED in the USA. IF you think JD 4200 and up models have 70% USA built PARTS totally built in the USA you are sadly mistaken. ....
