I have a 420 an with the heater in the air intake. Does anybody know how to check this to see if it is working? The glow coil on the dash no longer lights up.

I believe the preheat on those is just a heater element, sort of like a heavy duty light bulb element.

When they go, just like a light bulb, they become an open circuit.

Disconnect the power to it and put a multimeter set to ohms between the contact and ground, if it reads zero ohms, the element is burnt out and needs replacing. If it's reading a above zero then check that it's getting power when the switch is on.

Best of luck. ....

My 420 is also a hard starter in cold weather. I pull back/out the compression release and let it spin up for about 2 seconds and then push it in and it usually starts right up. ....
