Can any one tell me how to tell if the turbo on my Jophn Deere 1050 loader tractor is working? It is about 12 years old. I bought used about 3 years ago. It seems to run fine but I can't tell if the turbo is actually working. I have opened the turbo intake and can see the turbine freely turns but I don't hear a high pitched whine under load or under any condition. Should i be able to year the turbo working. The tractor seems to have plenty of power but i can load it down. Any response would be appreciated. Thanks Bob

A good muffler will keep you from hearing the turbo whine even when it is working. There should be a port on the intake manifold(ie. 1/8 npt) to connect a low pressure gauge. Most turbos run 12-18 psi at high idle. Get a service manual and it should explain the procedure.

Jim, a year ago I was looking at a JD 1050 and thinking about buying it. It had around 400 hours and was in pretty good shape. Anyway, I tried it out for two afternoons and never did hear the turbo! Like you, I wondered if it really had a working turbo. It did seem to run out just fine and had adequate power but nothing special. I used to run a JD 4020 with the aftermarket turbo and it sounded like a jet warming up....no mistaking its turbocharger! ....

Haven't had experience with turbo tractor, but on a 6.2 Chevy, if the turbo wasn't spinning, the vehicle was a dog, couldn't get enough air around the turbo fins. The exhaust side was freewheeling on the shaft and intake side was only spinning by the vacuum from the motor trying to get air. I guess a tractor would be the same. No turbo, no power. ....

In 16 years of using a 1050, I think I heard the whine only several times and that was at 2400 RPM under a heavy load such as pulling a sod drill up a steep hill while planting and while pulling a 7 ft Hesston 1071 mower conditioner up the same hill. If the 1050 had had quick tatch on the loader, syncromesh, and some springs under the seat, I'd probably still have it! ....
