Well I have had my Kobelco SK015 Excavator for bout 9 months now ( 150 hrs.). In that time it threw a track off 3 times. Once was a small stump--other 2 turning on a rock.
The first two times when I could not get the track (rubber) bak on---I got my friend down the hill to help me put it back on-----He was a bulldozer operator all his life. He always put the track on the rear pulley wheel & the tried to force it on the geared wheel.
Well this afternoon the track came off once again---I went in the cabin & watched a youtube video on how to put a track bak on.
In the video they put the track on the geared wheel & then ran the tract back wards & pried it on the pulley wheel.
So after 3 tries I got the tract bak on---never was able to do it before by myself using my Friends method.
Soooo---which way is correct by you guys? Is it whatever works best for you Or??. Seems to me That it it is easier to slide the tract bak on over a smooth thing than a geared thing-----???

What say you????

Skip, I have never had to install tracks but those men seem to know what they are doing.

Boy, have to watch that submit key. Got me again

But did you hear them talking about how tight or slack the tracks should be? Be sure yours are adjusted correctly. Back to have not had to install a track yet but I try not to run one track only, in want to turn use both. That helps keep the off side track on. ....

RUN both tracts to turn---helps keep the tract on----I did not know that----I still have much to learn---
Just today my buddy told me how to move the excvator with one tract off----gave it a try---not easy---but I can now do it---that will come in handy next time a tract comes off

Big thanks for that tip KT------;-) ....

Told my friend the bulldozer operator about the cog first method---don't think he liked me tellin him that---but twice we tried his method---cog last---well it took the two of us quite some time to get the tract back on both times---while I did it in 3 tries 2 days ago-----cog first( bout 5 min.).

Thanks for yor reply Art---
And you too KT

Skip, another trick to saving a bunch of wear (and peeling them off) on your tracks is to wherever possible do not turn with the tracks flat on the ground.

Put the bucket down flat on the rear face over to the side you want to turn towards about 20-25 deg., push down enough to rock the machine back so the front of the tracks are 6-8" clear of the ground. Now comes the tricky part. Using both feet and both hands turn using the tracks while 'swinging' the boom such that it's helping push the machine into the turn.

By doing it this way you really don't scrub the tracks on the ground at all. It makes a BIG difference in how much easier it is to turn.

Best of luck. ....

Murf, don't forget it is a lot of fun when you do this compared to a simple lock and turn. I have more issue doing this as don't have feet control for tracks. But doable. ....

Yes Skip, it's handy for that too, but in a strange bit of irony, it's against the law for our guys to smoke while operating a machine or driving a vehicle now.

In fact even sitting there with the beast shut off and smoking is a no-no. Some still do it, but it's a $500 ouch if they're caught doing it.

Such is life in this wonderful world of silly rules we have now......

Best of luck. ....

Okay Murf, this will be better than Ice Road Truckers...toe operators of Heavy Equipment. I normally can swing with one hand and operate both travel sticks with the other.

Skip, you want to see what you can do with excavator both good and dumb again search youtube. Just type in excavator. Some will amaze you. Still like the person unloading a good size one from a fair size flat bed track with no ramps just using the excavator boom and such. Helped me learn how to drive up or down the side of piles of dirt. Skip, if you do such you be sure you have your boom position where it does not have to move when you are in the middle of that slope. ....

Very well said. how about we make them illegal?

Wait Art, based upon their idea of "illegals" since they are suppose to be acceptable does that mean if smoking is illegal we must accept it? What screwed up thinking.

Hey Guy's---I'm bak with another Question---

Can mud cause a track to come off?

I threw one off today ---The tracks were loaded with mud from the day before. But also I was goin down a rocky trail, so I don't know if it was the mud or the rocks ---but I'm thinkin it was the rocks & perhaps the track needed adjustment. And at the time I was not doing much turning---just a bit of steering.

Anyway---can mud throw a track?

BTW---I'm gettin pretty good at puttin the track bak on by my self---Though this time it was a little harder in the spot where it came off--( photo shows where I had to work on it )--not to mention the mud on the tracks & drives. ....

Skip with as much as your tracks are coming off it would seem you have a wear issue but not a track expert.

On the mud, totally guessing but if it had dried would make sense to me it could serve about like a rock.

(corrected my mispelling before Jeff could) ....

My limited experience with putting a thrown track back on the sprokets was when I was kid just out of high school working for a road const. crew. I think it was a D6 Caterpillar that threw a track in the mud of course. Just the memory of that experience would make me want to replace or tighten,or both, whichever it took real soon to prevent that from happening again.
Just that one incident was enough to last me a lifetime.

Frank. ....

Good to hear from you. Sorry for the track issue.

Hey thanks KT---I checked on ebay but I could not find a listing for my Kobelco SK015.
In surfing around the web I found this company ----Radmeister.com----I seem to like this co.
They say they manufacture most of the tracts for sale----Don't know if the link will work---so 2 tracks for $840 + ship.($200)
Another company is Midwest equip. 2 tracks for $700 + ship ($200).
Still searching----But leaning towards Rademister even though it is $140 more. This is not a easy task as I know nothing bout tracks.

Well KT----I'm bout out of places to use it---I only have 5 acers, mostly wooded & very rocky.
I have ATV trails every where---Run out of places to put in new ones. Though there is a trail I hand dug many years ago going up the side of a mountain----I could widen & finish it up further------But I'm very leary of doin that---its steep to.
Anyway saw a guy in town who had a macchine just a little bit bigger than mine----asked him bout the tracks---he said he paid $1000 each for them.
So unless other suggestions come in here I think I will order the tracks from Radmeister----Not the cheapest but figure ya get wat ya pay for. ....

Happy to help out.

BTW, the most common error I see on those links is that both the "Link URL" and "Picture" one have "http://" already in the box, so if you don't delete it first, or only paste from there on in the link you have, it adds an extra one.

The 'puter doesn't like that.

Best of luck. ....

Skip if you are out of places to dig come on down, have two trees to plant, others to dig up and take out, dirt to load and move, maybe you ought to plant potatos...should be good for digging them big ones!!!

It seems you need some son in laws and friends. I would run mine all the time for such if I wanted to and could afford to. ....

Well got some help the next day----makes it easier to have another person to run the controls. We got one new track on in bout 1/2 hr..
Now the other side is a diff. story----we could not get the old track off. We tried every thing---hooked chains to track & ATV etc, etc.. For more than 1 hr. we tried-----but it is still on there. I used the rig for days with out the track pumped up to the proper tension----it never came off. So it is gonna stay on as it is not in bad shape.
However I did see a video on YouTube bout how to remove a track using the bucket with a chain hooked to the track & rotating the track while the machine is on the ground--I tried this & I could see the track would clear the pulley wheel.
Thinkin I may have a problem getting the new track on I did not remove the old track---If some thing needs fixin it is almost impossible to get a mechanic out here-----
So till I figure out a way to get the new track on using the bucket with pulleys, chains etc. the old track will stay on. ....
