My buddies 1980's Model John Deere 950 sometimes won't start we think it is the clutch safety switch, when you turn the key sometmes it starts right up sometimes you have to turn the key twenty or thirty times, when you turn the keys it does make a loud klunk sound. We have looked all over for some sort of switch but do not see one. If anyone has any ideas please help. Thank you, Wade

Don't know the JD but my experience is you will only get a click if a safety switch is open. Hare you located the loud clunk sound? Is it coming from the starter/solenoid?

I suspect you either have bad contacts in solenoid or poor connections on battery cables either on battery or tractor end. Have you tried jumping it? Just because your cable ends are tight does not mean they have a good clean connection. ....

Thank you for your response. Went to South Carolina last week to hunt and work on tractor, cleaned the battery cables on both ends and they needed it, but it didn't fix problem but I did find the where the noise is coming from and its the starter, you can even feel it if you put your hand on it. I was able to tap on starter and it seemed to help, would still like your opinion. Thanks again ....

Does it just make noise or did it turn over the engine? Did you check to see if starter mounting bolts are tight? By chance is the solenoid on the starter and if so are you sure it is the starter the clunk is coming from? ....
