Hi all:New to compact tractors and will be getting a JD 4700 in a week or so. Have been looking at backhoes and JD recommends the JD8 with this machine. Dealer says about $9K.Looked at Kelley, Woods, and Bush Hog. The Bush Hog 862H seems to be the same as the JD8 and $6400 will put me in the seat. The small 762H seems to be the same as the JD7 and will run me under $5400 complete.Questions:1. Anyone have experience with the Bush Hog backhoes?2. Are these Hogs and the JD hoes basically the same? Differences.3. Any reason not to use the smaller 762H with the 4700? I will not be doing any serious excavation.4. Any other words of wisdom to a tenderfoot? TIA Jon

Jon I think you meant to say the dealer recomended a JD48 backhoe for the 4700.
I purchased a JD48 backhoe for my 4400 in June. I paid $7200.00 less tax for the 48 backhoe, power beyond kit, 18" & 12" buckets, tractor picked up, hoe installed, delivered. One for the 4700 should be about $300.00 higher because of the different mounting hardware. I am very happy with it. I looked at the Woods, Kelley & Bushhog. I liked the external pump on these hoes but did not like the 3pt or sub frame mounts. The 48 backhoe is very easy to take on & off. This is what sold me on the 48 backhoe. I have used it about 20 hrs mostly digging out tree stumps. It has plenty of digging power. Chris ....

I've used a variety of backhoes and they all seem to have their own good points. It is also about the most fun that you can have with a tractor implement. Only one backhoe was a clear "looser" - It was made by ARPS and they don't make it any more. Naturally I couldn't wait to buy one!
I prefer any the sub-frame mounted type to the three point hoes, the PTO driven pump to the tractor hydraulics (faster), and a high vertical reach for dumping. The higher the bucket will reach the better it is. A bucket should be very sturdy and powerful. Regardless of the capacity of the backhoe, that bucket should curl with enough force to take a bite out of the toughest ground. The good ones will curl right through shale, roots, and hardened clay. The bucket has to be stongly built to withstand this. This particular aspect of backhoes - the bucket curl - is what enables a small one to perform with a larger one. It also does not stress the tractor or the mount.
What else? Oh, I haven't mounted one of the new JD quick mount types, but I think I'm going to like them.
On backhoe and tractor size, too big of a backhoe makes the tractor awkward and tippy and stresses everything. Too small of a backhoe doesn't hurt anything but small ones don't dig quite as deep or dump as high. As long as the reach is suitable, a small hoe just makes the job take longer. Even a small hoe will outdig a dozen of your buddies with shovels.....

Jon - If the 762H hoe you mention is the same size as the JD #7, I would go with a bigger one. I have a #7 and although it works well for it's size, it doesn't do very well at stump digging. I end up with a pretty big hole for a 8 to 10 inch stump because I have to move out pretty far to the smaller roots. Just breaking a fairly small root (1 to 2 inch) can take some doing. I've also had trouble lifting the stump out of the hole, especially if the soil is wet and clinging to the stump. The lift and swing strength of small hoes isn't great. Roger is correct that the bucket curl is where the power is, but the dipperstick has considerable power too. I don't know how well the other brand hoes perform compared to the JD, but I would think a bigger hoe would be desirable if the tractor can handle it, which I'm sure a 4700 can.

Go with the #48, I have a 4700, just took delivery 2-days ago and have about 2 hours on the hoe. Love it and wouldn't want anything smaller. On and off is about as easy as it gets.

Thanks to everyone who responded. Getting the JD48 was a "no-brainer". Have it on order for $6900 with an 18" bucket - power beyond kit, installation, pickup/delivery, etc. included. Could have gotten it for $6745, but was from a dealer quite a bit farther away.
Took delivery of my 4700 last weekend - one powerful beast!

Let me clarify a couple of comments above, not that I am an expert by any means:
Someone in the know at Bush Hog told me, yes, the JD 47 & 48 are theirs. But this'll shock you--ARPS makes the hoes for them! That, however did not come from BH, but I believe it is correct. Talk about coming to your youknowhat via your elbow!
And the JD#7 someone referred to above is an old JD # and a much smaller hoe than the 47 or 48 if memory serves correctly. I know the first poster referred to #7 when they meant 47, but a later poster was comparing the real #7.

Jim whats the point. You are right the Bush Hog 762H & 862h are the same as the JD47 & JD48 except for one major point, the mounting system. This is why I purchased a JD48 backhoe for my 4400. Bush Hog only makes a 3 point hookup, JD has an outstanding frame mounting system that makes hooking & unhooking very easy. Bush Hog, Woods, Kelley & Bradco all make good hoes. John Deere just have them beat for mounting on there own tractors. Chris

Chris, you're absolutely correct, the 47 and 48 are the same as the 762H and 862H marketed by Bush Hog. The only difference between the two lines is the mounting. I got an email from the product manager at Bush Hog explaining that Deere had the patent on the mounting so they couldn't sell it directly.
For everyone who hasn't seen the Deere Rockshaft Assist mounting, go to your dealer and see it. There's no comparable subframe or 3pt hitch mount like it
from the other short lines. ....
