I recently bought this backhoe that did not have a number plate anywhere on it, just the name "Long" on the front. It's taken me quite some time to find out anything about this piece of equipment but I'm hoping someone here came help me. From some photos I've seen here I'm guessing this may be a model 1400. As you may can see from my photo the one I purchased for $500.00 is missing the engine and possibly a few other smaller parts. I was hoping someone here with a manual could tell me how much this piece of equipment weighs. Based on some other big backhoes like this I've seen I'm estimating it weighs between 10,000-15,000lbs. I purchased it intending to re-sell it for scrap but before I do I was hoping someone could confirm my estimate of the weight and help me make sure I'm not making a mistake putting it under the torch. Scrap like this here in Alabama is going for .13/lb. Thanks in advance for any help I might receive.

Have a friend who had a Long tractor dealership. In all my time there or talking with them never saw or heard of a Long backhoe. So I called him. Said they stopped production about 15 years ago. It was a Leland (not sure that spelling is correct) tractor and Long designed and built the other parts. Can not get parts for it. But that does not answer your question on weight. ....

Selling for scrap metal is fast and simple, however you may make more money selling it for parts on ebay or such. At least the buckets and cylinders depending on their condition. ....

I only thought it was a LONG because that's what it said on the front and it looks like the model 1400 I saw in a photo in another post on this site. Thanks for your reply. ....

Purchasing this backhoe has been a learning experience for me. I had no idea who to even approach about selling any of the parts to then fortunately for me the heavy equipment operator I contracted with to haul it to the scrap yard is in need of a backhoe bucket for his loader. He also suggested I try selling the canopy, cylingers and detachable front end loader bucket before scraping it. I think I'm gonna try to sell at least some of it before I scrap it now. I've just got to find somewhere to move it soon. That was the need for the quick sell, no place to store it. Thanks for your reply. ....

Would you sell the CROWD CYLINDER from the top of the backhoe boom?

I have a chassis serial # 2097 1400 Long. This appears to be what you have. ....

Yes I'll sell the CROWD CYLINDER. Online looks like a high dollar item. Send me your email in a PM and I'll send you some better photos then make me an offer if you want. I'll probably take it. It'll be better than scrap I'm sure. ....

I will get the men working for me started on it as soon as they get caught up from all this tornado mess we're dealing with down here. I may need you to walk me thru some of the dismantling steps when we get started. I'll let you know if we run into any road blocks. Thanks

First question. May sound dumb. How do we dismantle the canopy? It bolts on at the four corners is all I remember and is welded together every where else. ....

I have an original factory manual for the Long 1400, but am not a mechanic. I need to be able to install the canopy as mine does not have one now. I understand the time factor for you and hope you were not affected too much by the tornadoes. ....

If you have any skematic drawings of the crowd cylinder, brake shoe housings and brake pads and the power steering cylinders in your factory manual please scan and email them to me at ticketman4u@aol.com. I hope to get my men started tearing down the backhoe this week. The drawings will help with the dismantling so send them as soon as you can please.
Thanks. ....

The previous owner recently advised me this backhoe is about a 1975 year model and we found a plate with the number 964 080 on it. My men have started the dismantling and advised me this tractor has "wet" brakes inside the rear end. It does not have separate brake housings to remove unless you're wanting the entire rear end. ....

Showing my ignorance of big tractors again. In case anybody else is following this thread Smutts sent me a drawing showing the brake housings referred to that are "inside" the rear end. I'm learning! ....
