I recently purchased a new Kioti DK45CHSE tractor. Love it. :) I'd like to start replacing some of my standalone equipment with 3 point implements. I started doing research on 3 point logsplitters and I need to ascertain whether my tractor has the right valve to operate a logsplitter. The logsplitter manual (I found it online) states the tractor "must be equipped with a 4-way valve (for double acting cylinders)....

I've read my owner's manual. It states "The tractor is equipped with the remote control valve of the double acting type". It also shows a diagram hooking the tractor up to a double-acting cylinder.

The splitter manual also states the hydraulic system must be capable of delivering 6 to 25 gpm at 1500-2500 psi. The tractor owner's manual states the pump delivers 16 gpm....but it doesn't state the operating psi.

Does anyone know if this tractor will operate a 3 point logsplitter? Is there a valve I need to buy? I hate to go buy the splitter if it's not going to work. Your input is much appreciated.

Congrats on your tractor. When I looked at the Kioti line I was impressed at what you got for the price. I'd think yours has the required pressure and the splitter will work, but let me comment.

It's actually cheaper to buy a stand-alone machine than the equivalent rear attachment. I've found this on cement mixers, rototillers, stump grinders, hole augers, and especially splitters, where low-end new electrics sell for a hundred and change. So unless you need to operate in the field, or want the other advantages of a hitch mount (like for an auger), don't get the hitch version before checking the stand-alone. ....

I appreciate the comments! I certainly won't be replacing all of my tools with tractor attachments, but the logsplitter is one I'd like to replace. My friends seem to think they can borrow my tools when I'm not using them. I'm not lending my tractor. Period. I figure if I have pto attachments instead of standalone equipment, like the logsplitter, it'll reduce the amount of lending and it'll reduce the time I spend fixing things after people borrow from me. Call me stingy, I guess. But the older I get, the less patience I have for fixing stuff all the time.

A simple "geez, no" works. Say it with me, "Geez, no". I have a brother in law who used to pull that with me. He's even told me what tools to buy so that he could use them.

You will know the strength of a friendship if they get pissed at you. If you still can say no, rent it to them at MORE than what they can get it locally for. That's a good deterrent for next time.

Anywho, I'm with Auer. I picked up a 60-ton splitter off craigslist for trade for a flimsy little trailer. It was PTO powered. I decided to run it off my skid steer aux hydraulics until I realized it is not efficient nor practical--every time I wanted to pick up a load I'd have disconnect and reconnect. Plus it racks up hours on the meter.

Back to your question, if you have the rear remote you would have to run the hydraulic lines back to the 4-way valve with automatic kickout. The issue with this is if you plumb it one way, say, with using the rear remote valve pushed forward it will have to always be forward when you use the splitter. Otherwise, if you pull back the rear remote valve the splitter system will essentially work in reverse---UNTIL you go to use it then the valve will kick out because it normally kicks out when the piston rod ends travel increasing backpessure.

It's done all the time like you originally thought, but it's not the wisest.

Murf needs to weigh in on this since I think he's a proponent of PTO splitters ....

I don't know much about log splitters three point or otherwise, so I'd be the last to advise you on them.
"BUT", I have learned a lot about lending things, the hard way of course. Be polite as you can but a firm no is the only solution, relatives are by far the worst.
I still have a new backhoe bucket that a "Friend" borrowed and finally returned a year or so after I called him about it.
Guess what he has it again only he sent a mutual friend to borrow it this time under the guise that the mutual friend was going to use it to trench a footing for a room addition. It's a little narrrow 12 inch bucket that I bought extra with the hoe and never needed it. Far as I know the footing has been dug the addition built and my bucket has left with the first guy's hoe. My fault, yes, I don't like getting firm with people but this time if I get it back it stays here if I never use it the rest of my life. The first guy is just like you described "If its yours its mine too". ....

R-man -- hear about the sudden jump in tractor sales there? Seems everyone's getting one -- so they can borrow a certain friend's attachments! ....

I use a 3 point log splitter on my tractor. i build the thing myself for 1/3 the price others charge. took oll of 1 day to build. just set the rear remote port into detent mode and split to your hearts content. the one i used worked on my old JD870 with 1/2 the output that th Kioti has, and it worked just fine then also. gets like 30 tons splitting pressure on a 4" cyllinder ....

RC, my guess is the splitter does not have a valve on it and is set up for you to use the one on the tractor. To me there is advantage of this as it moves you away from the action just in case something happens. There is also a disadvantage in this as it moves you away from the log causing a good bit of walking.

The biggest arguements against splitter on the 3 pth I can remember is prevents pulling trailer also, tractor is expensive for use as EW pointed out. But it allows you ability to move the splitter to the wood I think best of any thing.

As to loaning out tools...with some people there is no pleasant way. Over the years I have been very blessed in this for have loaned a lot and have borrowed a lot.

Frank, since the guy has a machine your bucket fits on then his will fit on yours, right? So when he ask to borrow your's (if you get it back) then why not say, by the way I sure could use your bigger bucket. Just bring it and you can borrow my little one.

Of course the best method if they are not someone who will care for and treat you the same...I will be glad to help with that. I will get with you on when I can. Again borrowing and loaning has worked well for me. Other than the repairs on my brothers equipment I end up making! LOL ....
