Hey folks, new to the site and so glad I found it. Many interesting post. But like most I have a problem & need a little help. I just bought a new bush hog from TSC and hooking it up when I run into this issue. The driveshaft is a son of gun. When I tried to pull the ends out to stretch it out, it would not budge. I am able to move it out about 12" with a rubber dead blow hammer and the shafts are new painted and dry as a bone. No grease anywhere. I am going back out to beat on it a little more and plan on laying the grease to it once I get it apart and put it back together. Have any of you purchased one like this or they all like this? Thanks so much for the feed back

Hey Earthwrks, Tell me what happened with yours. I got it greased up and back together but still can't use it. The 5-6 inches needed to hookup to the PTO still has to driven out & in with a rubber hammer. I don't know if the specs or off or if it is bent somehow but I sure can't use it. ....

What you may have created is suction between the two male ands female pieces. Sort of like a manual tire pump that has a bad inlet valve or stuck piston.

I've had it happen. Maybe drill a small hole at the base of the either shaft to allow air in.

An easy way to get it apart until it's worn in or loose is chainn it to something stationary and pull the other end with a tractor or truck.

Also, someone may have switched one of the shafts with yours and yours isn't a good match.

Could just take it back to TSC. ....

Take it to TSC before you do anything they will claim damaged it.

I would not want to place a stuck or just real hard to slide pto shaft on my tractor for it to push on the pto unit on my tractor or the implement damaging them. ....

I'm more inclined to suspect one or both halves are bent. TSC employees (around here) have demonstrated a marked disregard for how they handle the merchandise. If you have a true straightedge, remove the PTO shaft from both tractor and implement. Remove the PVC tube shields. The straightedge should help you distinguish between a suction problem and a bent shaft.

A PTO shaft used ro be a square shaft with a corresponding square tube that slid over it, very seldom a problem with it telescoping if it were properly lubed, or not bent.
Fast forward to the cheap round tube with a semi circle flange formed on the side to correspond with a round mating other half cheap probably import crappy shafts we get today. If you grease them them the slightest amount of dust buildup and they bind, no grease they bind. Sorry but we seeme to be forced to use cheap crappy PTO shafts anymore. ....

landog, Hardwood make me think of this...if you get a replacement shaft be sure they give you one of the proper rating. Not only is length an issue but the HP the shaft is design to handle. A rough cut mower uses a heaver shaft than say a whirly bird does and the bigger the mower even more so. ....

KT;
Glad you chimed in on the here and now practical issues of a drive shaft,
Sorry but I just had to vent. Everytimme I even look at one of our cheap crappy limp excuse of a drive shafts we are asked to use I get mad. The old square shaft square tube ones from the past when properly maintained would outlast the machines they ran by fifty years. ....

Hardwood I agree with you on the shafts. Good analogy there, you are like the old PTO shafts and Ole Jeff is like the new ones! Sorry EW.

OK had the chuckle a hard work day needed. To my TP friends thank you for all you give of yourself here to help me and others. To those who may be new reading this, you will not find a better group than here. They have helped me many times in many ways. ....

It is not uncommon that sticky shafts will take out gear boxes on the machines as well as PTO's out of the back of tractors!!!

We see the PTO shafts broken off, driven into the rear castings of the tractors as well as on a lesser end the gear boxes of the implement.

The new shafts are closer rated to the horsepower needs under ideal conditions for the implements.

The days of just adding a little extra also adds to the price and many buy by the price not the quality today because some think they can sneak by, some do and some don't make it! ....

Last post I thank all you guys for the info & headed out to TSC to exchange the driveshaft. Well my hat is off to the folks at Johnson City TN Tractor Supply Company. Took the driveshaft back, they didn't have another one of the same grade. They upgraded me to a really good quality heavy duty driveshaft for the price of .01 cent without a hassel. Don't know if those folks are ever on here but thanks to Brad Store Manager, Matt & Ashley! Great customer service!! Thank you guys on here again also,,, phil ....
