Hi--does anyone know much about the Cub Cadet 3240 lawn tractor? It is a 2001 model (their 40th anniversary edition).

I am in the market for a lawn tractor to mow about 2 acres, some quite sloped, and to do some trim work around (under) fences, plus some other odds and end jobs--pull a 2-wheeled dump cart mostly. The dealer from whom I purchased my "workhorse" tractor (a New Holland T2210) also sells Cub Cadets--I have been looking other places but am thinking I want to keep things under on roof; plus I think the cub cadet makes a decent tractor. I have been looking at and test operated a new 2554 today. In the process we talked about trade-in's and used equipment they had. One was the 3240. For the 2554 his price was $4,399. For the 3240 (with power steering, shaft driven mower, differetial lock, among other things)(2001 model) with 430 hours he was asking $3,500--I think it had a 50" mover deck. I have not yet operated that machine--likely later this week. My budget is less than $5,000 right now. The older tractor is a heavier machine with more features and comes in under the new 2554 price.

Is that a fair price for this used tractor? Is it wise to buy a 9 year old tractor? What is the life expectancy of one kept up well? Are there specific questions I need to be asking? Should I not bother with the older tractor and stick with new? There would be no warrenty. They would "go over it" if I was going to buy it and would let me return it or they would service it again if I had problems in the first so many days.

Anyway, any comments or cautions?

The other used Cub Cadet he has is a '07 3200 with about 153 hours on it for $5,600--a little bit over my budget; and a 3100 for $4,500 (I cannot recall the year or hours on this model--I was interested in the diff. lock the 3200 has if I was going to go to that level of tractor.)

Thanks for any input!
