I have Kubota bx2350 looking to purchase 48" tiller
any recommendations...gear verses chain drive?
will do small garden and food plots for Deer...

This has been hashed over about brand, gear/chain drive, low dollar/high dollar, etc. With only light use in mind I really doubt the chain/gear issue will matter much. I'd look for a used Land Pride or other domestic made tiller that will have parts available. I have a Land Pride 72 in. model that gets probably two hours a year run time, at that rate it might be worn out in a hundred years. Another issue is about a slip clutch or shear pin in the PTO shaft between the tractor and the tiller gear box. You will find rocks and other obstacles you didn't know you had so if you get a slip clutch be sure to loosen it up every year before you use it to be sure it will slip. Frank. ....

Sorry, I should have did some research before my prior post. I thought a BX2350 was a mid twenty HP. tractor, but now I discover they are rated at 16 HP. and didn't find much more about one as to PTO size, three point hitch size, etc. Perhaps your first call should be to a Kubota dealer to see what size, etc. tiller is recommended. Frank. ....

We actually have been running 50" Kuhn tillers on the back of the BX with no trouble here in NY. We have bit the Kubota line of Land Pride and we have had good luck with those this year.
I like them because of the slip clutch as the shear bolt units are to time cunsuming changing the shear bolts every trip across new ground with our stones we raise.
It is appropriate to cut the drive shafts for the desired length so not to damage the tractor or the gear box on the tiller.
Some tillers we have had to put the hitch pins facing to the inside to get the desired spread for the three point hitch arms.
Shear bolt or slip clutch should be loosened every year to be sure they will work well. During off seasons they both should be maintained or with moisture they will rust and set up and not work when you need them. The shear bolt won't shear nor will the slip clutch slip to allow for the safety of the machine.
When both of these systems are working right although the slip clutch is a bit gentler on the rest of the drives it's rare for the gears or the chain to fail without a lot of use unless the lubricant fails do to moisture contamination. ....
