I have a Zen-noh 1501 which is basically a grey market Kubota 1501. That said, it runs great except it has started to blow white smoke out of the exhaust more than usual and spatters black fluid out the exhaust stack. Like I said it runs great but whats the deal with this black liquid?? Any ideas as to a fix?? Thanks.

A leaking head gasket might explain this. If a little moisture is leaking into the cylinder it will turn to steam and as it condenses in the exhaust stream it will turn into black liquid. How's the coolant level? Does the white smoke dissipate like steam? ....

I had a skid steer do the same. It ended up using a quart an hour. The white smoke is unburned fuel mixing with engine oil. The black liquid is the remnants of diluted engine oil mixed with the unburned fuel.

Better check your engine oil level constantly too before you have a ma$$ive overhaul in your future.

You might get lucky and be able to just replace the rings on one piston--disclaimer: I'm not a mechanic, so this may not be advisable (but it's something I would do ONLY because I know what it was going to cost to have mine rebuilt: $5000 minimum--and possibly a lot more). I sold the entire machine as-is to my buddy for $5000 and he spent $800 just in parts.

Most likely it's a broken ring. Mine got so bad it blew a section of the ring out the exhaust. ....

I"m inclined to go with head gasket too. From what I've seen on other diesels, white indicates water (steam) in the exhaust. The black liquid forms as the steam condenses (cools) and mixes with diesel soot in the manifold and pipes. When you start up the engine, exhaust pressure causes it to spray and splatter. As the engine heats up, it becomes steam once again.

When it comes to parts and labor, I'd much rather change a head gasket any day - than deal with the results of busted rings.

As a tip, you should not refer to your tractor as a Zen-noh.

"Zen-noh" is a contraction of the Japanese for "National Marketing Federation for Agricultural Cooperative Associations." It buys various tractors, mostly Yanmars and Kubotas. If you bought a vehicle that had "Blessed Church" or "Dept of Fisheries" printed on it, you wouldn't identify it that way to find parts or information. ....

Auer LOL "Blessed Church"---ah-ha--the writer is you is coming out. Too funny.

My machine's smoke dissipated after a few minutes when I first got. But the longer I had it the worse the probem got. And it had plenty of power though--just sucked oil. ....
