Got my tractor back with a replacement bell housing. The battery had been working fine, but since it was old and the hood was off, I replaced it (with a good Costco one).

Then spent a whole day catching up with the mowing. All that time, my (add-on) battery gauge showed it was charging to the max -- the needle was at the top of the green just short of being in the red. This was more charge going in than ever before. But wouldn't a new battery be fully charged and unable to accept much more?

Any idea why, or what I should check for?

I'm gonna guess you still have the old 3-wire alternator on there. The field wire (F-post) is where the battery tells the alternator how many volts it needs to top itself up. Without seeing what's going on, I've got two possible ideas;
1. the field wire is either disconnected or poorly connected (this could have happened during the bellhousing replacement)
2. something is discharging the battery faster than the alternator can charge it back up.

For (1), trace out the wiring. The field wire normally comes from the voltage regulator. For (2) check for a discharge indication when the key is on - but the engine isn't running. Or if you're close enough to an auto electric shop (or auto parts store) where you don't have to trailer the tractor - have them check it for you.

It's the original alternator, so I'll check out your suggestion. Thanks, amigo. ....
