As you can tell from the hours, my L3010 HST gets babied and not used a lot. It's a 2002 model year that I bought used in 2004 with 300 hours on the clock and I am now up to about 420 and winter is over so I can turn to maintenance.

I have the Kubota manual and I have restored a couple of Ford 9N's so the 400 hour Kubota service doesn't scare me. I have a couple of questions:

1. Any tricks or tips that the manual doesn't mention?

2. Can I save any money on filters by ordering them from an out of state Kubota dealer online? My local dealer (Canns-Bilco in Alburtis, PA) is top dollar all the way, plus 6% tax.

3. Is Super UDT the way to go for the tranny? The mechanic who works on my foreign cars is an absolute AMSOIL nut case and he wants to order AMSOIL hydraulic fluid in for me. I think that he shaves with AMSOIL in the morning.

4. For the front axle, should I go with Super UDT or SAE 80-90 gear oil? I am surprised at this choice because these are very different products. Hydraulic oil is usually much thinner than 80-90, and more expensive.

Thanks for the advice.

Paladin,

A few tips and tricks not mentioned in the manual.

Remove the dip stick from the transmission case before refilling with fresh hyd. fluid. This will make it a whole lot easier to add fresh fluid, as the air will have a place to escape from, other than from the filling point. Makes filling a whole lot easier, and a lot less messy.

If you have a loader, backhoe, or any other hydraulic cylinders on your other implements (wood splitter?), make sure you retract all of them fully prior to changing fluid. If not, the first time you hook up your loader, backhoe, etc.......the old oil remaining in the implements will immediately contaminate your fresh oil change.

DO NOT use 80-90 gear oil in the front axle. My Kubota uses Super UDT in the transmission, as well as the front axle. If your manual calls for UDT in the front axle, please use it. You have a choice between Super UDT and standard UDT fluids.

You can check prices on the internet for Kubota parts......but shipping isn't cheap. My nearest dealer is 120 miles away, so the shipping is far cheaper than the gasoline required to get there and back.

We also have several Kubota dealers on this site who will be more than happy to help you with your questions, as well as supply you with your maintenance items.

Joel

Joel, the cylinders on any of the equipment will still retain fluid whether retracted or extended, granted a bit less when retracted. This is one of my reasons for always using the fluid that the manufacturer suppplies or recommends to avoid mixing unlike fluids. Doing this might not save the world, but I just feel better about it. ....

Unless I need coffee more than I think I do this morning.....

The dipstick is the ONLY place you have access to the transmission / differential. If you don't remove it, the fluids not getting in, period.

Best of luck. ....

Actually, the Kubota maintenance manual gives you the choice between Super UDT or SAE 80-80 gear oil in the front axle. This really surprised me because I am used to running 80-90 in the the tranny/pto casing of the old Fords that I restore. It's a very different animal than hydraulic fluid and it can get downright thick in the winter. I probably will buy a third pail of Super UDT and use it for the front axle also, but I plan to take a hard look at whatever oil comes out of the front axle when I drain it. ....

If it helps any, we use Super UDT in the front axles of our machines that plow snow commercially.

After MANY hours of hard work each on many machines, no problems, and the fluid comes out as clean as it goes in.

Best of luck. ....

Murf,

Hmmmm.

On my tractor, the dipstick is located in front, and below the seat. The fill point is located behind the seat, on top of the 3-point hitch.

I drop a funnel into the fill point, behind the seat, then pull the dipstick out from in front of the seat.

The funnel fits perfectly into the fill point hole completely sealing the hole. This makes it very difficult for any air to escape from the reservoir. Pulling the dipstick allows the displaced air to vent without slowing the filling process.

I'm not familiar with every Kubota. I just assumed that the L-series was designed the same way.

Oh well, no harm done. I didn't blow anything up today....yet!

No worries, there's still time left. LOL

On the newer L series tractors there is a sight glass on the rear of the differential to indicate fluid level, and then there is a red plastic screw cap ~3" in diameter on the very top of the back side of the diff. right between the two rocker arms.

It is my understanding all L series were built this way to allow for a cab.

If there was something on the top of the transmission itself it would be inside the cab if so equipped.

Best of luck. ....
