My father has a toro tractor with a Koeler engine.Afew monthes ago he complained to me that the tractor was smoking terribly.Apon inspection I found there to be gasoline in the crankcase oil,a lot of it.We changed the oil and inspected the carberator for a bad needle and seat or stuck float but found nothing and considerd it to be a fluke. Today again the tractor was smoking excesivly and was found to have a lot of gas in the oil.If the fuel pump was faulty{there is a mechanical fuel pump bolted to the motor, driven by the cam shaft}and the diaframe was leaking could the gas leak into the crankcase? Has anyone ever had or heard of a simular problem? Thanks Frank

Sure. Used to be quite common on the old mechanical (lever style) fuel pumps. Only solution I ever knew of was simply to replace the failed pump and gasket.

What Greg says has been my experience too. The only thing keeping fuel from the crankcase on most mechanical pumps is a diaphragm. When that ruptures it leaks right in. ....

I can remember just 25 years ago driving cars and trucks with that type of fuel pump--and yep, they went too.
In fact my current gasser dump truck has one. ....
