Hi, I'm looking to repair our overwintering paddock used for horses and want to deal with the compaction. I've been looking at Subsoiler/mole drainer single leg we you can see here www.siromer.co.uk Description as follows:

"Ideal for soil drainage. They are capable of working at up to 300 mm deep. The turf is first cut by the front mounted disc to avoid damaging the top surface, then follows the leg that cuts a slit 6mm wide and leaves a 38 mm hole. The final operation is performed by the rear mounted press roller with its spring loaded action leaving the top surface with a minimum disturbance."

The question is will my JD755 4WD 20hp tractor actually be able to pull it? Any advice welcomed.

Pull it how fast, how deep, in what?

It's not a power issue but a traction one, and that's determined by how many wheels are pulling (I don't know about diff locks on Deeres, but without them, 4WD tractors are more 2WD), tire tread (type and depth), and tractor weight (which can be increased fairly easily in various ways). ....

First welcome to TP.

I did go to the web site to look at the product and the image on it was fuzzy so mostly going by the verbage.

Will this do the work you want in a paddlock? If you have small hoof animals I might be concerned about their catching the hooves in the trench. But it is suppose to close the trench so that may not be an issue.

Will your tractor with 20 hp pull it? A lot will depend on the tires and traction. Also be sure your JD will lift it. If you have 2 wheel drive with turf tires would say no way. If you have 4 wheel drive possibly. I have a 27 hp Kubota and it will pull about same plow about 20 inches deep. Amazed me. Some of this will depend on how hard the soil is. I have also had all a 68 hp Kubota wanted to pull a 2 shank plow with one running in previous cut trench. That soil will compact to about like a rock that is hard to crack. If not doing a lot you can always pull the plow as deep as it will and then come right back deeper until you get the full depth. You also may not need to plow as deep as it can either. You would do well to dig down to find where the compaction layer is in your soil and you will find little benefit of plowing much deeper. If you will keep it plowed after the first hard time it will be much easier. Depending on the soil type plowing with trenches near each other can make it easier. You really are cracking rock like soil so the first trench in an area is often the hardest to pull.

Now saying all that, this looks costly with the coulter up front and the packing wheel in the rear. Is is possible to rent one or borrow such for a test? I would guess it would be about $350 or so in US dollars. Here you often see much simipler plows see link below. Not recommending that brand but it shows a suggested US price of $200. ....

Thanks both for all the good advice. I have the ability to add plenty of weight and do have 4WD with a diff lock but I am using turf tyres. I can wait until the surface is really dry. Based on other kit I use and the look of it I think it will lift it , speed is not really an issue so I guess traction is my main concern. I only want to go around 12" deep from what I worked out. I agree also it looks expensive even accounting for the fact kit is often more expensive in the UK so I will look around for alternatives or at least for a hire/trial. ....
