A loose engine ground could cause this. Not sure how your tractor is grounded but often there is a cable between the frame and engine/transmission assembly. Make sure that the terminals are clean and tight. It wouldn't hurt to disconnect them and file the metal around the contact area clean. ....

When you jump the starter the solenoid clicks but it won't crank? That's either the solenoid, starter, battery, cables, cable connections or a seized engine. Not much else it could be. ....

What happens when you jumper the solenoid with the starter bolted up to the engine?

FWIW, I think these machines do have a history of ignition switch and other assorted electrical problems. They like to blow fuses too - have you checked all the fuses? ....

A starter switch MAY help it for awahile--why I don't know--I've had 4 switches--- but my '02 33D has this same problem since it was basically new. I was going through main fuses which is located on the left hand side on a pig tail next to the "firewall". If that fuse is bad or is corroded the gauges won't work either. I'm fairly sure it's a control module or safety module issue--one or both. About $225 worth of parts. I simply just jump the solenoid to the starter with nail. Whatayaspect for $20K? ha ha

If you conquer this isssue you will be the first here---seriously. ....

I too have had this problem and think i have it fixed. There are three or four relay fuses on the right side toward the dash. You must take the sides off and the front two plastic cover plates below the steering wheel. The relays pull out and you can get them at any NAPA store. ....

My 29D has been giving me starting trouble so I read through these threads. It turned out to be the neutral range switch (I think that's the right name) although I also had a weak battery and a broken battery post connector. I jiggled the shift lever a bit and it fired right up. I'll have to look at the switch itself later to see if it is damaged. Thanks for sharing your expertise guys. ....

Griffi,
Is it loose or just out of adjustment? Have you tried using a good electronic contact cleaner on the switch? About to believe all tractors or outside equipment needs a can in the tool box. ....
