Haven't done it, but I expect that getting a battery, using the old wiring, and replacing any bulbs and gauges won't be a problem. But the starter and charging system (generator, regulator) might have to be replaced. ....

The starter will be fine, we have several vintage tractors that were 6v systems, the starters have been running on 12v for years now.

As the voltage doubles the current is half of what it was, the speed is a bit faster, but that just seems to help the old girl start.

Other than that, gauges and alternator need to be replaced. In one casee we used an alternator off an old Toyota, worked like a champ.

Best of luck. ....

Like Murf says the starter will be fine. I hada '47 Farmall A with a 6 volt system. Sometimes I used a 12v jump and it spun it just fine (much faster--Vroooom!) with no issues. ....

Something to keep in mind when changing the alternator: some automotive alt's aren't protected very well from the elements like dust/dirt; some guys aound here used the GM-one-wire ones which didn't last because of the constant dust ingestion. If you're just mowing it shouldn't be a problem.

Also, hang onto the old wiring and keep it intact as much as possible, lable everything--even draw diagrams and take extensive pictures. Memories fade when it comes time to sell her to someone looking for an "original". And nothing clinches the sale like presenting a box full of good info and original parts. ....

I figured the starter would hold out ok, I had an old VW bug that was converted and we left the 6 volt starter for a long time. Also I too jump this tractor with 12 volts when the battery is dead, only when the starter is turning I dont leave it hooked up.I also figured the points would be ok as the 6 and 12 volt bugs had the same points in em.I read in a diffrent post someone wrote about putting in a resistor for the coil. But I figured to just change it for a 12 volt one. Right or wrong? Mostly I was hoping to get info about changing from positive to negative ground, can I just reverse the polarity? Also a diffinitive anser on what alternater works best. I have a few chevy types{go figure right} But was hoping for a schematic on how to wire it up. Is it a big deal to mount it?We have a mower for this tractor but rarely mow grass with it. I like to pull a cordwood trailer with it mostly but the six volt system is always kind of a crap shoot starting up, and way out in the woods if you stall out and cant get started its never to good. I've often carried a 12 volt battery and jumpers with me. It would be better to just have 12 volts ,the battery would just be more common and easily traded with something else in the yard if need be.As for selling it It really dosent belong to me, my brother in law that now lives in Virginia left it here when he moved about 20 years ago as he had no land where he lived there to use it on so he left for us to use rather than sit idle.We have talked for years about switching it over to 12 volts and he is definatly up for it. Thanks for the speedy replys. One more Question were newer cubs ever 12 volt? Thank again! ....
