Need a Shibaura Thermostat? Anxious to share my discovery. I really get tired at the local automible counter of asking for parts only to get "what car is the part for"? Now we can answer the thermostat for our Shibaura is for a 97 "Geo Metro", 180 degrees please. Yes after a lot of reaserch I found the small diameter, 1.72 in, thermostats that fit our Shibauras also fits a popular car which is in stock at my small town Auto Zone for aproximately $7 bucks. Fits like a glove right into the appropriate groove. The gasket is another matter and the one in stock for that car can only be used as a pattern for the central hole as it is too abreviated for our application. I bought one anyway for the additional $1 and used it as a pattern for making a gasket that fit. My tractor is a SD2003 with the 24hp engine but I belive this Thermostat fits lots of models. Be sure to use a gasket and sticky compound to hold the thermostat in the housing so you will insure proper placement. Otherwise you may get a craked housing. Also remember the thermos expansion spring is faces down into the block.
Some one previous had removed the thermostat and left it out before I got the tractor. That, as any diesel mechanic will tell you, is bad for the tractor since wear is substantually increased when a motor starts up from cold and doesn't warm up quickly. There is a lot of people that think that the removal of a thermostat results in more efficent cooling of the engine. The truth is that is exactly opposite of what occurs. The thermostat keeps the engine running at a steady efficent temperature while allowing the warmer coolant to disperse more heat from the warmer radiator to the air, especially under loads and higher air temperature. Now my tractor temp needle stays right in the middle where it is supposed too. Ron

No weep hole but the tractor warms up fairly slowly and stabilizes right were it is supposed to at mid range. I assume the thermostat leaks some other place because a small amount of coolant circulates as indicated by warm radiator quickly. ....
