First time finding and reading the forum. Have a 35 HP Cub Cadet w/loader. Have owned it eight years and it has 575 hours. With weight in the bucket driving the tractor either on level ground or downhill the left wheel locks up. Going uphill it never happens. Changed hyd. oil and the filter and found no metal filings. Thought differental might be locked but it seems to work fine. Brakes are not catching. Asked mechanics from two former dealers, they both said if they were forced to work on it they would split the tractor to try to find the problem. EXPENSIVE!!
Any suggestions?

Weird one, and you don't know what needs fixing, so try some diagnostic operations.

If you're referring to a rear wheel, what happens if you do the same operation but in reverse, or if you added a rear weight as from an implement?

If you ruled out the brakes, does the differential lock work OK? Does the control for it move when the trouble occurs?

What seems to cause the problem is the front dipping or the rear unloading. That's a new one on me, but to confirm, you could see if partly deflating the rears prevents it. Or if partly deflating the fronts causes the symptoms with an empty bucket. Also, if you happen to be able to see any of the lines/attachments relating to the diff (or the brakes in case you're wrong) from underneath, you could put a truck jack under the diff housing and watch under to see if something happens while someone raises the rear. (I trust you know about safety stands. And have a compressor.) ....

auerbach, thanks for the reply. The left rear tire locks up in either forward or reverse. If the ground is slippery the tractor needs no load in bucket for this to happen. The left wheel has always had a tendency to dig up the ground when making turns. Not so with the right wheel. The diff. control lever does not move when the wheel locks up. On dry ground adding rear weight helps some. Speed doesn't seem to make a difference. I've checked the brakes and diff. lock with the rear wheels suspended. Both brakes worked and released OK. The diff. lock engages and disengages when released. ....

Would you say this could be the case: the left wheel doesn't turn as freely as the right, which becomes apparent when the rears have less traction due to a loaded bucket or slippery ground?

Not exactly sure what you say happens when turning or how you tested the brakes releasing. If you spin the raised rears fast and put in neutral, does the left stop first? Let's hope it's a dragging brake. ....

Has it always done this or recently began? I assume this is in 4 wheel drive. If so and did not just begin have you checked to be sure the tires are the correct size and pressure and even measured the diameter for the left tire compared to the right tire? Have you ever tired turning using your rear brakes? If so can you lock the left one and the right one do the pulling? How do you unlock it when it locks? To me it seems your left wheel is locked from possibly using the rear diff lock and is not releasing or your brake as already mentioned. kt ....

The problem started last fall. I first noticed it when the bucket was full of firewood(five hundred to eight hundred pound load). Over the next month it got worse. I haul the wood up a hill and then down a grade on an old dirt road. The wheel never locks up going up the hill through the woods. The heavier the weight the more it locks up in both two and four wheel drive. At its worse it was locking up with nothing in the bucket. After changing the oil and filter I think it improved some but not much. Probably wishful thinking on my part. I have been laid up most of the winter and all summer so the tractor is now used sparingly. I checked the brakes with the rear tires off the ground. They seem to release with no problem. In free wheel rotation they both stop at about the same time. ....
