While looking at brushcutters I noticed that a "Clipper" had a movable (backwards) framework that attaches mower to 3ph, attached to the back of framework is a flatbar that runs to back of mower and is attached to tailwheel frame by a chain. A similar "Howse" (5') does not have this bar chain assembly. Is it used to level and /or raise mower? Thanks. Dan

A Lilliston Clipper? If so, I'm not sure that chain is original equipment. I have an old (factory) picture of one, and it just shows the lift as being flat stock. Possibly added by a previous owner?

But yes, in both cases the diagonal member (flat steel or chain) assists in distributing that portion of the mower weight lifted by the tractor toplink. During actual mowing, the toplink does not typically play an active role. It's generally slack. especially if the mower has a flexible toplink bracket.

Dan, many if not most rear cutters use some sort of system to allow the cutter to raise so if tractor wheels were to be driven through a low area the cutter is able to raise up. Of course this requires or needs rear trailing wheels. Some cutters use such as a chain for that and some use a 3rd arm link that pivots. Unlimited tilt can be harmful. If cutter were to tilt more than the pto shaft can slide together, you can get damaged to tractor, shaft and cutter gear.

The cutter with the chain probably has only two solid lift points where the Howse has four. Thus a rear single lift point is required. kt ....

A lifting system is kinda what I thought. Greg, no I dont think its a Lilliston Clipper, just has a decal that says Clipper, on the tail-wheel assembly is a plate with a mfg co. in Ala plus it is a fairly new mower ( I dont know if the entire mower built in Al or if just the tailwheel). Thanks guys for the info. Dan ....
