Had a brain fart this week. I got some bear problems around my little house. Real cute and funny till you walk out behind one chasing him away right? Then about 5 min later I unhook my 3 point arms and the top link and see the bear cross infront of me. I pay no attention to it but keep its location in my corner of my eye, I drive away and turn around to hook up my plow. Thats when I see the front half of the power take off pushing gravel. On further inspect the joint looks to be fine but the yolk is busted. Anyone think I need to inspect the power take off before using it? Was planning to start her real slow although I was so teed that I decided to just finish my plowing and go home none the wiser (or madder)

I'd check the PTO by insuring it not bent seal not leaking. Turn it on and use something that wont move center marked and look for wobble. No wobble IMO would indicate no damage. ....

Broken, LOL--only EGGS have YOLKS---the yellow stuff inside.
However, PTO driveshafts have YOKES.
Did you and Kenny Thompson go to the same sc'ool? :p
Maybe I missed it, but how/why would you have a PTO hooked up while plowing?
I'm jis' sayin' ....

Evilyn sped readin class grad eh?
I passed the spell purtion of her!
I thought I unhooked the whole brush hog but in my haste, I forgot to unhook the power take off. I drive forword not looking behind and down but just behind. I am concerned about bear in area ( you know the feeling, kinda like where you are now but worried about another form). I go to BACK UP so I can hook up to the plow when I realize something is scarifying the gravel.
Thats the whole story, call me Forrest Gump!
Harvey
Thanks for the idea, will do that asap. How much of a hit can it take? I would think it can take a good amount of offset pressure would you? ....

BA, I'm not really sure about what part you think is damaged.
If the drive shaft came apart the only part at risk is the tractor end. From your title I think maybe the yoke is cracked, in which case you really need to replace it. If it's the shaft part you can get a new one welded on, if it's the coupler, just get a new one and swap them.
In either case change the U-joint while it's apart.
Also be sure to put it back together the right way, not 90° off and out of phase, it will cause a vibration and a lot of extra wear.
Sorry to hear about your trouble.
It's no yolk! LOL
Best of luck. ....

BA: Going with the "broke your yolk" theme... I'll bet you had "egg on your face" when it happened, huh?
Annnnnnd you built my New Holland skid steer, hmm? In the words of Ricky Ricardo, "You got a lotta 'splainin' to do Lucy!" ....
