Hi. I'm new here. Just got a Mitsubishi MT17 and it's stuck in 1st gear. Anyone have any ideas of what to try?

JeffHunt,

Welcome to the group. Thanks for stopping in.

I'm not familiar with your tractor, but most manual tractor transmissions are similar in design.

First off....check the condition of the rubber boot on the shift lever. If the boot is cracked, or missing altogether, it's a good possibility that the shafts inside the transmission are simply rusted and stuck.

There should be a plate on top of the transmission, which the shift lever passes through. Remove that top inspection plate.

Just be careful not to drop a pin or a fork into the gears. It's best to lift the plate just enough to peer into the transmission housing, before removing it completely.

If something does fall out when lifting the cover, you'll then know where it came from, as well as how to put it back together.

Joel ....

Jeff, it would help if you could tell what lead up to this.

I had about the same to happen once on a Massey. My problem was you could pull up enough on the gear shift lever it could clear the internal linkage. Not shifting the gear but the lever moving. In that case you had to remove the top plate and simply shift the linkage by hand. It really was very simple (35 years ago). Of course there could be a broken part, loose linkage or such. Hope yours is simple and cheap. kt ....

JeffHunt,

Most such things are caused by exposure to the elements. A whole lot of people never put their tractors under cover. They're left out in the open for years on end.

Do you know whether or not the clutch is disengaging? A lot of times the clutch plates rust and stick together, causing shifting problems.

If the clutch disengages, I'm guessing that you probably have a broken fork, or a pin has fallen out and wedged itself between the moving parts.

Let us know what you find once you remove the side cover.

My guess is something rather simple. Get it clean where you don't have trash drop in the transmission and pull your plate as Joel suggested. Quick question first, have you checked the oil in the transmission? It may be contaminated with water and has allowed rust to build up. If you find water in it, you may wish to drain and replace and run it some first to see if that happens to be the problem and solution. If you have not already, check and if there is filter be sure to change it. If you have just gotten the tractor you should change all fluids and filters to have a base point to work from. kt ....

JeffHunt,

Glad to hear you got the thing running properly.

If you take care not to leave your tractor out in the elements for extended periods of time, I doubt that you'll ever have problems like that again.

However, I would follow the advice given earlier. Somehow water got into your gear box, causing the rust problem. I'd definitely drain and replace the transmission oil. It's the cheapest form of insurance you'll ever buy.

Happy to hear it was a simple problem.
