Hi everyone. I have a JD 261 grooming mower and I'm trying to remove the blades for replacement. I don't have a shop manual or the owner's manual. The blades spin clockwise (looking down on the mower) and are attached with a single bolt. The deck is 5ft wide with 3 blades total. It is a rear mounted, PTO driven unit.
Browsing around, I've learned that these bolts may in fact be reverse threaded. Before I get myself a large torque wrench, I'd like to know for certain. Does anyone know with certainty whether or not the bolts for this particular mower are reverse threaded?

Assuming there's at least one bolt thread visible to you, you can see by carefully looking at it which way would turn tighter, which way looser.
You won't need a torque wrench to remove, and without a manual it won't help you to install. What you will need is a means of locking the blade while you turn the nut. ....

None of the bolt thread is visible to me. I was really hoping someone on these boards has dealth with this exact model mower and could tell me whether or not the bolts are reverse threaded or not. To lock the blade, I used a C-clamp on the mower deck to prevent the blade from spinning. I don't know whether or not there's a build in mechanism for locking the blades individually. ....

If you go to JDparts you can look up parts breakdown of your your mower. It shows the bolt as a cap screw and does not say left hand thread. From the picture, blade direction indicates to me it would be a standard thread.
Good luck ....

I'd be real surprised if it had left hand threads, blade direction alone would dictate right hand threads. I've had quite a few Deere mower decks, but never a 261, all the decks I've had were right hand thread. If you have never changed the blades you may find the bolts to be very tight, the factor of the blades pulling against the threads in a tightening direction plus rust will sometimes have them stuck pretty good. Oil the threads when you replace the bolts, that will help with next time's blade change. Frank. ....

Chris, not a JD person but they probably use the spindle assembly on this deck on others so the bolt advice given probably is correct.
On my decks, found a block of wood good to hold the blade but a good impact wrench normally takes that need away. It would of course be dangerous to have the blades rotating while working there even if from impact wrench. On my decks I find if you snug the bolts, the blades will tightern them further. kt ....
