Hi, I am new here and found this forum to be very informative. I have a 5 acre property where I keep a few horses and am in need of a tractor to move dirt, manure, scrape a driveway and other minor ranch duties. No grass to mow or snow to clear since my property is upper desert with many rocks. More than likely I will only purchase a front loader which I will use to scrape a long driveway along with its other usage. I was reseraching and comparing Kubota L3400 HST 4 wheel drive and Case D/D40 tractors. Case is 4 cylinder 40 hp and the Kubota is a 3 cylinder 34.7 hp. I am interested in purchaseing a new tractor and staying within 30 to no more than 40 hp. My question is am I better off with the Kubota? If so, why? I am talking with both companie's dealers and they are willing to deal at this time since the economy here is on the down side. I am eager to learn more from your experience than brochures of each brand of tractor so am open to suggestions. One more thing, what is the major difference between the Kubota L3400 and the Kubota B7800?

Thank you for any response.

General advice:

The dealer is more important than the brand. When it needs something you're not likely to drive it to the nearest garage. And they should instruct you on operation and maintenance.

Get the tractor with the loader (and a back blade) installed. Make sure it has 4WD. Sounds like you need only 20-30 HP and ag-tread tires. Cylinder count doesn't matter except 2-cyls are noisy. Get a couple year's worth of replaceables (fluids and filters) with it so you'll have them. ....

Kubota has 0% interest now for 42 months if you are financing the purchase. I have a B7800 which I am trading for a L3240 but I have hill side and rough areas and go thru ditches. Also mow and move big rocks so I need--want-- something a bit bigger and 0% for 42 months and a good trade in for my B7800 (made) me trade. I had a BX2200 and it was great but slower and lower than the B series. Not sure the BX's wouldn't do what you need and the B surely will. Other will tell you to get the adjustible lowering 3 pt if your going to do rear blade work. I usually just back up with my front bucket lowered and angled to do what leveling or scraping I need to do and I also have a boxblade. Don't have a regular blade. Try the B and BX on the dealers lot and see what you think. ....

Kubota builds their tractors. No idea who builds the small Case. Suspect in this size tractor you will find better support with the Kubota. In my part of the world you find a good many dealerships that sell Case in the larger size and Kubota in the smaller or compact size. kt ....

Both brands are good solid tractors, and will have a good dealership network for years to come for your parts and service needs. I doubt there is a dime's worth of difference in the reliability and ability's of either brand. In the long term the Kubota will probably have a better resale value. As has been mentioned the dealership is the most important part of buying and enjoying your tractor. The cheapest dealer isn't always the best dealer, it is a good service department, friendly attitude, and a readily available supply of parts you may need that is far more important then brand. Have a great day. Frank. ....

Frank, don't shoot me but I do sell both! We also service and repair both. I do hate to dispell the rumors taht all things built are the same.

THEY ARE NOT!!!!!!

Difference of uses and owners do make a difference in life and repairs but they still do not cover for initial build quality.

There are many things to consider for each as well as all brands that make the differences of resale value as well.

Art; I guess you have me puzzeled a bit. I think you are upset about my comment that Case and Kubota are of equal quality or is it that my comment that a Kubota would likely have better resale struck a raw nerve? OK let me explain a bit why my comments were as they were. First off I've never owned a Case or Kubota compact. My personal experience of ownng several Case farm tractors and several IHC farm tractors was that with the exception of a model or two in both brands they were good solid tractors. That being said I based my opinion of Case compacts on the reputation of their precessors. Just this afternoon I sat on my brother in law's new 2640, (I think) Kubota, it is his second one, the other one is 25 yrs. old and still runs fine. Here again I am based my opinion of the Kubota tractors on never having heard much of any negative comment about them. I by no means have found or driven past every Case or Kubota dealership in the tri-state aeria in a 100 mile radius of Dubuque, Iowa, but my observatons are that most every Kubota dealership I go past probably has 10-25 compacts, Gator type Kubota utilitys and moweres out front, where as any Case dealership may have from none to maybe 3 at the most compacts out front. This tells me tha a Kubota must outsell the Case or the dealers wouldn't stock them. This is strictly where I got my assumption that a used Kubota would hold it's reasle better just because they seem to be far more numerous than Case around here, other parts of the cuntry I know nothing about. We both know that there are operators who can break an anvil with a rubber hammer, and others who could haul eggs in a dump truck and never crack an egg, so regardless of what the quality of either tractor coming out the factory door somebody can either destroy it or make it last 50 years. I certianly hope I havent lost a friend over something I said, so I do apologize for what ever upset you. Frank. ....

Shawnlove,

I believe the biggest issue is parts availability........and for many years to come after the sale.

Kubota is one of the few tractor companies who make their own engines, drive trains, and every other component in their tractors. Therefore, Kubota has 100% control over their supply lines. There are no worries about contracts expiring, or suppliers going belly up during the middle of a production run. Kubota maintains full control over its entire production line........and, therefore, over its entire parts inventory.

With the possible exception of a few body parts, most every Kubota part is still available for most makes and models purchased within the past 25 years.......and the prices for parts on those old tractors are quite reasonable.

Few other companies can claim to have 100% control over their suppliers. This is why Kubota has such a great reputation. It means a lot to have parts available to you for years and years to come.

Joel ....

I believe Cutter is correct. Being in a business, sometimes one must bite their toungue. What you may wish to say, for various reasons you are not able. Also the written word often comes across harder than the spoken word as voice and facial expressions are lost. kt

Frank, I'm far from mad, lifes to short! I do love my tractors! Some are great for one thing and some are not so good at others. One thing that I have learned through the years is they are not all built the same or with the same integrity. My largest dissappointmens on this side of the fence is from large companies that might change the brands they sell, not the color. This for the customer means they later might have parts problems when the tractor might be 20 years old. This problem is color blind! It doesn't have anything to do with the the quality either and that is a major concern for longevity. ....

Art; Thanks for the reply, I'll choose my statements a bit more carefully in the future. Having visited with you a time or two in the past it is very clear that you have a full understanding of farming and the lawn and garden needs for the conditions in your trade aeria. Anyone can sell a tractor or a piece of equipment and bluff their way thru the sale with unfounded facts and figures, but it is very clear to me that that just don't cut it with you. I do now run Deere equipment for the last 20 years or so instead of Case/IH since most of the Case/IH dealerships in a rerasonable driving distance form my location, (northern Linn County, Iowa) have merged with larger dealeships that leave me in kind of a pocket whre driving didtance was a concern. Again, my little sermon on dealerships, A dealership with sales people who will put the needs of a customer above maybe a bit better profit margin on somethiong that isn't quite right for the customer will earn them a customer for life. The Deere dealership I have used since going green, (about 15 miles), has that type of sales staff, an very knowlegsable parts staff plus a top notch service department. I hear stories all the time about going a hundred miles or even to another state to escape the sales tax, etc. etc., but when I have a problem, a phone call takes care of it without any hassles. If I lived in your sales aeria you would be my equipment supplier with what ever brand or type of equipment that your long experience told you that that I should have. Just a little side note, if you know of any brand of tractors that have pontoons let me know. The almost unceasing rains here have the farmers in a tight spot, prime corn planting time here is from April 25-May 10. After that time slot yield loss from late planting begins to acumulate on a daily basis till June first,(about the latest practical time to plant corn here), at a rate of about two to four bushels per day in the later stages of planting. Some have maybe 10% planted and others have planted none so far. Enjoy your day. Frank. ....

I agree whole-heartedly with Art, the paper on a tractor doesn't tell even a fraction of the story!!!

When I moved from 'farming' to 'contracting' some 20+ years ago, I had several tractors of different brands. It didn't take too many years to figure out which brand did the best job, at the best (overall) price, and with the best dependability.

There is a reason there's only one colour visible in my picture # 6, for what I do, it's the best choice.

Best of luck. ....

Frank, the moisture problem is beyond me for ideas! I know the grain charts are being adjusted daily because of the rain issue which is going to drive the food prices even higher with the dual uses of food and ethanol. Even if you could get the seed in the ground it more then likely would drown and not produce.

Maybe rice might not be out of the question for some land. ....

Your're right Art, a crop planted in soil too wet to be worked properly has two strikes against it as soon as it is "mudded in". Most of the pattern tiled ground has become fit just now, but the NWS is predicting heavy rains for late today and tonight. Hope things are going better in NY. Frank. ....

My neighbor's wheat is three inches tall. Only the top 1/3 inch is visible through the snow we got last night.

We usually get our first snowfall on -- or around Halloween. We got our first snowfall on October 3rd last year. If this trend continues, it's going to be a very short summer.

Frank, our local weather guys are saying to be ready for a hot dry summer when it gets here. It's tough for them as they normally can't predict weather more then 48 hours acurately here do to the contours. So far we have had a relatively dry spring which is good for getting crops in. ....

Sure she can: only needs to know: if wet, it is raining; if white, snowing; if frosty, cold; if casting a shadow, sunny; if you can not see, dark. If you ticked her, tornado or hurricane coming or possible earth quake. If her heart is broken, flood of tears. kt ....

On a very serous note, and the government and News people all want to think those in Colorado who predict how many hurricanes the East Coast and Gulf Coast will have know what will really happen. Hello, how many hurricanes have ever hit Colorado? How often have they been correct? Have many times per year do they get to "adjust" their predication? Very much like the Global Warming deal. They predict and it cost those of us who live HERE. Why not ask the hurricane area to predict the number of blizzards that will hit Colorado, who would buy that? Oh yea, the same brainy ones. ....
