Any ideas on what I must do to fix? Ford 2810 front wheels wobble left and right when speed is 5th gear or higher. Checked wheel bearings--no play; checked front axle bushings--no play there either. Steering wheel has 1/4 turn play. Nephew says the shimmy stops when he puts foot on steering linkage while going down the road. Much appreciated!

Short of putting in all new tie rods and other linkage. Usually if you look at toe that will help. Toe in a little that will keep pressure on those parts. Dont over do toe or better road surface to either tire will cause it to wobble. Depending on size of tire a quarter to half inch toe well help. Steer box and linkage is another critter.

I've seen some old tractors with a shock asorber mounted on axle to tie rod couldn't tell you if would work or not. Should work. Question is how much of a PITA is the wobble and is it unsafe and how often on road.

On my old "M" I can usually stop by quick Left Right turn steering and it will stop till next irregularity in road.

Thats just the problem with old stuff they get worn out and wobble. Right Art? ....

Harvey has you going the right direction with the linkage rebuild. I'm sure that ford/NH will have everything you need but likely pretty pricey. I've did this before not with Ford, but a Case 1070 and it seemed that unless you started at the steering box then progressed thru every linkage componet including the bushings in the spindles below the tie rods that you just never got the shimmy all out of it. I'd suggest pricing the componets at Ford and an aftermarket parts outlet before you have at it, maybe you can just go slower and not disturb it unless it becomes a safety factor. Frank. ....

Like any other tire, it could be a defective tire carcass like a bulge, broken or separated plies--or like I found on my pickup after getting it stuck in thick mud---dried mud on the in side of the rim throwing it off balance. Also, if the tractor has been sitting for awhile they can take a set and get a flat spot which may or may round out depending on the condition of the tire. ....
