I was driving for two hours today clearing snow. Without warning, no noise, puddle or otherwise, the tractor will not go in to or run in reverse. I can not even get the shifter over to reverse.
I checked the hydrolic oil and it is very low. I added a gallon, and it is still low - very low. Is it possible that this is the cause? I didn't have any more oil, so couldn't continue trying, but what could stop the tractor from going to reverse, all of a sudden? And WHY at the end of my driveway!!!!! Unless I'm missing something, it won't back up because you can't get the shifter into reverse, so the shift linkage is where I'd start.

As for why at the end of the driveway, they somethimes do that out of spite if you let the fluids get too low. ....

Auerbach, thankyou. It was indeed a mechanical block! I took off all the housings around the steering column, and couldn't see anything wrong, not that I know what I am looking for, but it appeared to be just stuck. I gave it the ol' one two, and it came free. The shifter lever has two "keys" it can grab for either reverse, or forward, and there seems to be a lot of play going from one to the other, and it is almost possible to leave both engaged at the same time. Is there supposed to be so much play? Do I just need to be more careful shifting?
As a child of the 80's/90's and the electronic and microchip days, I am constantly blown away at the complicated mechanics of these old tractors. Someone actually had to figure out how to make all these parts work so perfectly together. The shifter parts, are all jammed in to the steering column, and must have 100 parts, but all do what they are supposed to. And thankfully, It is usually easier to fix than taking apart a computer, and going for diagnostics. I am totally mechanically INEPT. Yet, three times now I have endevoured and found a solution. Much thanks to this board and all the fabulous advice.
And now I hereby swear on my tractor, NEVER to let his fluids go down again!!! I promise in front of the whole world wide web!! Poor little guy... ....

That tractor isn't old. Like us, it's a classic!

And as such, I bet you can find a reprinted Service Manual for it. ....

Buzz, no idea on your tractor but I was using a Massey few years ago that had enough slack you could pick up the shifter lever clear of the slots inside the trans, getting it where it did not engage or disengage the grears. Very simple to fix, just a pain. BTW, your transmission uses Hydro oil? kt ....

Buzz; On your 1466 you move the inside shifter lever from L thru neutral to R, the furthest back position, correct? If this tractor has been used a lot on a loader the shufter likage finally just wears out. I'd bet a box of donuts that nothing is wrong inside the transmision. Take the worn looking parts along to a Case/IH dealer, he probably has everything you need in stock, or can have it ana day or two. Frank. ....

From the steering pedastal it drops to the clutch/TA housing and then they run back to a housing on top of the transmission. There are several knuckle joints at the pivots that could have gone bad. Other wise you need to pull the floor board to pull the top cover which carries the fork for the range shifter. ....
