I have a 2000 Cub Cadet 7265 w/ 3cyl diesel mitsubishi.

Mice got into the exhaust over the winter and filled it with corn we took the manifold off and corn come out and was in the head ports we removed the head fearing in got in through the valves and very little corn was found..(2-3 small pieces)

I might state it was never (started)run with corn in it at all, we saw it before we had a chance to start it... ordered factory parts, put it together, filled the coolant, started it, ran perfect,5 min after running started blowing coolant out the top of the removed cap (alot) like an airpocket..

Shut it off, cooled down, restart and same thing!!! if you put the cap on when it is running it wants to push it out the overflow (understandable)... the head gasket will only fit one way so that cant be it. so i changed the t-stat and still the same results..

The problem is it instantly starts to overheat when running only a few minutes. is there a bleeder valve you have to remove to get the air out when doing a coolant flush? i am an auto mechanic not a tractor mechanic.. but i understand fully the working of a cooling system.. w

not sure about your particular tractor, but pressure to the cooling system usually means head gasket shot, head cracked.

cant tell from your post, if you did not replace the muffler is it possible it is still possibly partially plugged causing back pressure which blew your new head gasket?

that could also explain quick heat up on engine

also on my kubota 3 cyl diesel there is a rubber o ring that must be replaced along with the head gasket, anything like that on yours?

another possibility, was the tractor overheated before the corn ordeal possibly warping the head and did not notice problem since it was the end of the season and it went to storeage.

another thing, did you follow the bolt tightening sequence and torque specifications when you replaced the head gasket, if not that could cause what you are describing.

just spitballing what I'd look at, not expert advise on this matter. ....

great advice t.y.

hmmm i never thought of the muffler still being clogged. the tractor ran great before it was put away.. never had a cooling issue ever..a month after it was put in the garage was when i noticed the corn on the floor.. the torque sequence was done correctly but the info from cub cadet stated only 30ft lb of torque.. which seemed very low to me..

i did replace the o-ring. and pressure testing the system after it was running yielded no leaks. is there no bleeder for this set-up when doing a coolant flush.. it really feels like an air pocket..but your scenerio on the muffler will be checked again. it doesnt sound plugged when running and i figure popcorn will start coming out if there was some corn left

LOL.. ....

I agree that 30 ft. lbs. seems aweful low. I don't know what size bolts they are. I know the bolts are metric but would normally think that if they are equivalent to 1/2-13 or 5/8-11 that tightening torques would be like 100-140 ft. lbs respectively.

I'd definitely contact Cadet or an authorized Cadet dealer that does maintenance for them to verify. As Randy has indicated sequence of tightening is imperative. You also go progressive, working your way thru the pattern getting up to the desired tightening torque. Most manuals will also tell you to recheck it after the engine has been run just long enough to warm up. ....

torque is probably right, my 3 cyl kubota is 31-35, too much will break bolts and stuff,

I'd pull the muffler and blow through it with compressed air, and or shake it out good, depending on the baffle layout ya might not be able to get anything out of it (think maze) it can't be totally plugged or it would shut down due to back pressure, but enough to allow it to run but still cause some back pressure

dont know about bleeder on cooling system, never seen such animal, ....

push comes to shove check compression and bleed down on each cyl, that will tell ya weather ya blew the new headgasket. ....

In turn, I'd check the coolant for combusion products and proper antifreeze, test-run without the muffler, power-flush the rad, disconnect rad hoses and flush the block. ....

Twincreeks, it is amazing to me that mice would have gotten through the muffler. I thought there was sufficient baffles in there to prevent that. Now, have I ever looked at an open diesel muffler, NO.
As carefull as it seems you were, no doubt you also checked the air filter and the intake system for mice trash. Doubt that could be enough there to allow the engine to run and over heat so quickly. But, if you have not, I would. kt

Twin I Gotta agree with air cleaner, that is possible, and would add:

Repressure test the cooling system. That should be the quickest way to check headgasket to waterjacket. If it tests OK it's almost gotta be circulation.

With the over heating and pushing out it sounds more like a circulation issue especially at 5 minutes. Water pump turning? Air lock in water pump? Fan Belt tight?

Others said it but it is worth repeating. If all that is good I'd check the lower radiator hose and or pull the thermostat next looking for circulation. ....
