We had a Private Mail Spam attack this morning where about 20 members were mailed a ridiculous spam message looking for money .

I may have to implement some additional security to stop this type of invasion in the future.

Dennis

Unfortunately, when someone like this Lillian1 poster missuses the Tractorpoint Private Mail system, this can lead to mail delivery problems for the Tractorpoint site. That is because for the recipient the most logical thing is to mark this as a SPAM email. Enterprising SPAMMERS are getting more creative and are attempting to subvert legitimate sites like Tractorpoint by cloaking their activities within valid businesses like Tractorpoint. The SPAMMER uses my site and my mail domain jplan to send the email from my server as a valid Tractorpoint member. They even automate the process. That is why you often see the script letters and number images on so many sites so you cannot spoof being a person. Because I am the company that sent the email the risk to me is that my mail server gets ID'd as a SPAM server.

The Tractorpoint Private Message members received from tractorpoint@jplan.com was sent from the jplan.com site as a valid Private Message from a new Tractorpoint member (now deleted by me). The content was crap because the new member was unethical, if you see it is from the jplan domain it is from the Tractorpoint mail server and is a valid email though the content could be bogus. Please delete the message and alert me if you have received such a message so that I can take action. Please don't if at all possible makr it as spam. Marking one message as spam should not be a problem as long as you continue to receive Tractorpoint alerts. If you stop receiving alerts and other Tractorpoint mail let me know and I can work on getting the SPAM block removed. Unfortunately mail server spam blocks are across the board, that is if jplan gets blocked by AOL then all AOL accounts won't get email.

So anyone who receives one of these Tractorpoint Private messages please just delete it and let me handle it on my end. Do not report it as SPAM.

If you are afraid that new people will join Tractorpoint and send you SPAM messages just turn off the Private Message feature in your profile instead. Meanwhile I will work on a solution.

Appreciate your patience and cooperation.

Dennis

No problem Frank, it is understandably confusing as to what the correct thing to do is. That is why I elaborated on the issue.

Isn't funny how there is always some clown ( the character that prostituted our private mail system) that just wants to muck things up for all of us. I have been spending so much time on this site to make it more useful and to grow the membership, then some idiot comes along....%^%#$($^(%^%&^@$%^*((*&(*& and sends out some hopeless moronic message to lots of our members!

Keep up the good stuff Frank and I want you to keep plugging away at that computer for a long time to come :-)

Frank, you just have to remember the three constants in life! Change, taxes and death! If you change fast enough the tax man might not find you, and after death? Let the family sort it out! Oh well, chances are if you never made a mistake, you've never done anything! I know thats not you! Merry Xmas! ....

Dennis,
I was going to tell you the anti spam software my IP uses HAPPENED to catch if for me but could not find it. They use "Barracuda" and it does help. Sure does not catch all of them.
Your question on why people do such, there has alwasy been those who do such for many different reason. I think it is called vandalism. They often think what they are doing is smart of funny or getting even. They do not realize how much hurt they are inflecting and most on themself. If they would take that engery and money and put it to something profitable they would be ...profitable. A conecpt most do not understand.

Effective immediately to use the Tractorpoint Private Mail System you either have to be a "Tractorpoint Contributor (Premium Member)" or be a "Verified Tractorpoint Member".

The Verified Member process is:

-no anonymous email accounts (AOL, Hotmail,Yahoo,Gmail...etc) can be used for a verified email address
-you must send a verification request message to the Tractorpoint Operator with your userid
-we will send a verification message to the email address you supply
-the verification process takes a minimum of 2 weeks

Or if immediate Private Mail access is desired a new member can purchase a Premium TP Contributor Membership.

Thankfully you went into farming and not explosives as a living Frank. ;)

The results might have been explosive!! :)

Seriously, as my grandfather taught me as a little tyke "The only people who don't make mistakes are people who do NOTHING.".

You don't strike me as that type at all..... :)

Best of luck. ....

Stick around Frank. Even folks who do this for a living can have a hard time telling legit email from spam. If the "from" address (legitimate_user@jplan.com) is valid and it came from Dennis' web site there's no mail filter in the world that can catch all the spam without also deleting legitimate email. That's the problem with anonymity. IMO, the anonymity of the internet has caused so many problems that I'm becoming an advocate for a more secure internet (new technology) that disallows anonymity entirely. It's a shame that it's come to that. ....

Hardwood,

I can see from the responses of the other TP members, that my message was poorly worded and missconstrued as if you did something wrong. I have reworded that message which takes your name out of it, you were a victim as we all were. Hopefully the new message is more clear that this is an internet issue as Ken pointed out. I have taken steps to minimize our exposure to the Lilian1 spammers.

Please accept my humble apology !

Dennis ....

Dennis; No aplogy needed, I just need to be a lot more alert as to what I do with all these neat buttons I can push. I've always enjoyed the fellowship we have here and would truly miss not being a part of the discussions. I'll admit I overreacted too, so I hope we are back on good terms for the long haul. I'll always disagree somewhat with EW of course just to keep him stirred up a bit. Frank. ....

I have to confess I have marked my own stuff as junk in my Thunderbird email, and then wondered where the messages went ;) ....
