On my B7800 I have the R3s and in the snow they work great, the cleats are actually pretty aggressive and I have not had any issues with the snow (I usually clear the snow in 4 wheel drive). Secondly, they do not tear up my lawn when I am mowing with the MMM. For my application (residential home owner with a small amount of property) the R3s, after a full year of use, indeed was the right decision.

R-4's are horrible in mud if there is no bottom to it. R-4's are designed for machines that carry a lot of weight and need tread that doesn't tear or chunk-out, like on a front-end articulated loader, backhoe, skid steer, etc.
I have noticed that R-3's are being used on road graders though where those extreme duty needs are not as critical. ....

EW; I've noticed here that the newest county graders have an R-3 type tire but they also are front wheel assist. Heavy as a grader is it probably doesn't matter much between R-3 and R-4's. We haven't had a big snow for two or three winters where they put the V plow on the front, they used to always put chains on in order to back out of a cut before the front wheel assist came along. Have you guys ever noticed what New Holland uses (or used to use) on their bi-directional tractor? If I'm reading it right, VT tires. They are very similar to huge R3's. It makes sense as I seem to be backing under power as much as going forward (snow blower, box scraper, pulling snow away from buildings with the loader). Just checked their web site and it looks like the pictures have R1's again. ....
