I am purchased a vacuum attachment for my tractor that requires 3,000 - 3500 rpm to run efficiently. My PTO is standard 540 on my NH TZ22DA. Surely I can use some belts and pulleys to get some additional RPM however is there some way to really step up my RPM ? The standard NH issue vacuum is over $ 2,000 new and I already own this one and like this one better. How can I change the RPM through some sort of gear box to increase the RPM?

There's an easy mathematical way to figure it out--but I forgot it. My sense is, by the time you engineer it, buy the parts, build it and test it you could have installed a direct-drive or belted gas engine, probably in the 13-18 hp range if I had to guess. I have a walk-behind pavement blower that has a 8hp on it and it will blow about 40 feet. Suction (and I assume with leaf chopping ability) may be a different story. ....

OK here's a try at the dumb post of the day...
I've gotta believe if the vacuum attachment was made for attaching to a tractor that the makers knew what a standard PTO RPM is. Could the required 3,000 RPM be referring to the RPM's of the vacuum fan and the unit itself has gearing that increases the RPM of the vacuum to the level desired when hooked to a standard 540 RPM tractor? Just a thought...

Hey Brian,
yes mine was the dumbest post of the day! :-) ! Your points are well taken and Well I thought it would be pretty simple to hook up this thing to my NH. I have solved the bracket and mounting issue.
The JD MCS (material Collection System)unit was for a 420x series tractor and JD set it up for either a pulley drive (there was a 2000 rpm shaft drive option that included a single larger pulley attached to a direct tractor drive I assume was a 1k RPM drive) the pulley set up).. I had assumed the pulley drive was 540 ... bzzz wrong.. on my part.. and given the NH has ONLY a 540 now I feel kinda stupid.. so this is really a puzzle. So first question is was the drive system on the 420 2rpm, 1rpm? ( in other words what is the system set up for as I received it with pulleys) Then I guess I would be able to change the pulley to the appropriate size! ....

There's a handy little pulley size calculator available on the web.
There are three factors to consider......
Drive Pulley Diameter (Attached to the tractor's PTO shaft)
Drive Pulley RPM (Set at 540)
Driven Pulley Diameter (Attached to the blower)
By plugging in your parameters, I've come up with the following solution.
If you use a 23inch diameter pulley on the PTO shaft..... at 540 RPM....... in conjunction with a 4 inch pulley on the blower....... you'll end up with 3105 RPM at the blower.
You can substitute pulley sizes if the blower's housing or safety shields do not allow enough room for a 23 inch diameter pulley.

Also after reading your follow-up post, I wish I could help, but I'm not sure I understand the problem. I'm sure someone here does and will help you out. It does sound like there's got to be a solution there somewhere.

I did know what you meant but I think my wins for dumb.. I have rewound the tape so to speak. I have found a pulley calculator on the web and am backing into the size pulley I will need to make the RPM. I think i am there.. Thanks for humoring me! ( I think I should say tolerating my stupidity is more like it. ) Mike ....
