xmarine; Backhoe attachments for any size tractor that use only the three point hitch of the tractor to fasten them on are a bit risky for damage to the tractor. Your first point of damage will be the three point hitch of the tractor, they just arent built heavy enough to stand the rough use a backhoe can produce. The backhoe stabilizers help but a lot of strain still goes to the rear of the tractor. I personally have never saw a tractor broken in half from anything other than a souped up tractor pull tractor, but stories do abound, some true, some not. Remember there are people who could haul eggs in a dump truck and never break one and we also all know people who can break an anvil with a rubber hammer, a lot is to do with the operator. I don't know much about other brands, but Deere and Kubota both sell a subframe mounted backhoe attachment for their tractors that is not dependent on the three point hitch. These are much better systems and are very easy to mount and dismount. I have a # 48 Deere hoe for my 4310, I can have it on or off in ten minutes or less with no tools and no lifting, the Kubota system looks very similar and should work just as well. Give them a look, it may cost a bit more then a three point hoe but I think it is well worth the difference. Enjoy your day. Frank. ....

Hardwood,
I too have a 48, but I was not involved with the purche, so please help me out a little here... can the frame mounts be added to a number of different models? And, how much more do you expect to spend for a frame mount vs. a 3 point mount hoe?

xmarine, sorry I strayed from your question. I can testify that I have operated my own frame mount hoe and a 3 point model, (although not on any of my own tractors)- the frame mount seems superior. However, I cant get mine on and off that quickly yet. It takes me about 20 minutes to get it on, 5 to get it off. Unlees I'm drunk and it's dark. "Bota breaking in half? I doubt it, unless I was drunk and it was dark. ....

Frank,

You wrote, in part, "Remember there are people who could haul eggs in a dump truck and never break one and we also all know people who can break an anvil with a rubber hammer, a lot is to do with the operator."

You know that guy too, eh?

I have a friend with a pickup that looks like a "V". He was hauling a 150 gallon fuel tank plum full of diesel, across a plowed field, when the frame snapped in half on his on Chevy S-10 Pickup. He said he came to a pretty sudden stop.

Personally, I would have stopped him when I saw him throwing that tank in the back of that toy truck.

Never heard of a Kubota, or any other tractor for that matter, splitting in two from using a backhoe on it........but I have a friend who could easily do it.

Joel ....

Kleinchris; I just checked the Deere website. It looks like the #48 hoe is still a current model. They show subrame kits available for 4300 thru the 4720's and also for the 5105 thru the 5403 series tractors. I did not price a three point hoe before I bought the 48, but I would assume being you aren't getting the subframe that a three point hoe would be less expensive. There has been some discussion here in the past about difficulty with the three point arms of the tractor failing to lift the hoe assembly high enough to insert the mounting pins, but I've never had that problem yet. Perhaps that is what is causing you to take more time. Ten minutes including the time for removasl of the three point hitch lower and center arms is an easy do for mouinting. Frank. ....

That tractor would handle a 7-7.5 foot backhoe and the best would be frame mounted with tie's to the loader sub frame. There are a few makes of tractors with certain combinations of hoe's and loaders that are more prone to break then others.

the original Kubota's were a three point with a rigid top link! ....

Joel, unless I'm way off on my math, a load of 150 gallons of fuel shouldn't have been enough to damage the S-10. 900 pounds plus the container weight (300?) isn't too much weight, unless the guy was jumping terraces with the truck or something like that. You're right though, the operator can make all the difference in the world, which is why I never loan my tractor. ....
