Has anyone changed out their pneumatic tires on a finish mower for solid rubber ones? I have a LandPride 1660 finish mower and have the tires slimed to prevent flats, but I have popped the tires off the bead several times...not exactly a good time right in the middle of mowing. I know that some mower brands have solid tires and I wonder if there is a reason not to change or if the change would be worthwhile (if I could find an economical solid replacement). Anyway, your views are much appreciated.

Mobil; I'm sure you mean the caster wheel tires on the Land Pride. I had the same problem, if you lowered the mower while moving the tires would just roll off the rins being they were usuallly crossways of your direction of travel when they hit the ground. I don't know if hard rubber tires are available or not, but tubes will solve your problem for lots less money. This has been several years ago but I got the tubes from a Fleet Farm Store for less than ten bucks apiece. I'm afraid your biggest challenge is the slime you have in the tires now. I don't know if you can put the tubes in and just leave the slime in the tire or whether you'll have to clean them out. Better not wear your Sunday best when you do it. Frank. ....

Hardwood, yes, it is the caster wheels that I'm talking about. And you're not joking when you refer to the mess than slime makes. Even reseating the tires will make a mess. The problem I'd have with tubes is the reason that slime is necessary - it seems that my tires have an unnatural attraction to mesquite thorns, briars, nails, you name it. I don't think that I can slime the tubes too...hmmm. Anyways, thanks for the suggestion...might end up trying it, but it'll be next Spring because the grass is growing slower every day now. Oh, that reminds me, it is time to spray pre-emergent.

You probably can find airless tires for that size. You may find running a little higher air pressure helps also.kt ....

Mark, if your main problem is the tires rolling off the bead, pump them up to 50 PSI. That problem will be solved.
Is this a FDR1660? ....

I've found with mine that changing direction (FWD/REV) causes excessive stress on the side wall load. I pick mine up and set back down each time I change direction. I really try to never use reverse when mowing.
The other problem I have had is the real cheap tires. Bought a bunch of tractor supply $4.00 tires mounted on rims. They would not stand any abuse. Back to good tires and tubes no problem this season, so far. ....

My buddy ahd the same problem. He took off his old tires and rims and replaced them with caster wheels from TSC or Harbor Freight for about $10 each, then had them urethane foam-filled for about $200. The dealer wants more than that PER tire filled. You can buy aftermarket foam-filled tires for mowers ready to install---but they are pricey--about $60-100 each depending on size and type. ....

Billy, I'll try the max tire pressure before I do anything else. I haven't been running them at max pressure, more like 35ish. And yes, it is the FDR1660...great cutting machine.
I just got back from cutting some limbs for a friend in town. It's HOT here in north TX today. Probably about ten degrees hotter than normal for this time of year. Had to come in, eat a bite or two, and cool off. Now if we could get some rain!
