I don't know what happened to this but here are the messages I have:

*****************************************************
Hi Greg,

In general images in browsers are cached so they are local to your machine after the first visit so they load instantly on each page. So it really is not a choice of which thing to load first, and I am not intentionally loading ads first, they just load as they are coded in the page.

The forum content is a call from your browser to the server where your request is processed and then sent back to you over the internet. Everyones network connection can be different not only in the purchased speed but also in the path taken to get to the host server.

>From my connections that I use TP on the response time seems pretty good, even not that bad on my Blackjack smartphone.

Nonetheless there are always things that can be done to attempt to make the piece that I control on the server faster. If there is a specific page that is slower than the others I can look at it.

Dennis

***************************************************
I respectfully disagree Dennis. Since I'm on a T1 equivalent, I set my browser to load new pages every time. And every time the advertising loads first. I then wait for up to 30 seconds for your server to actually deliver the forum content. I really do believe it's a matter of prioritization at the webserver.

We went through this one time before, when you first introduced the Google-supplied advertising. At that time, they were taking up more space than did the forum body itself. You were successful in tuning that up, I think the page loading file prioritization may be somewhere down that same street

//greg//

*******************************************************
greg - I can't believe you're having issues on a T1 line (but obviously you are...)

While pages can be re-arranged, and you can 'flush' responses to the web browser, I don't believe there's a guaranteed method to send prioritized content from the server to an individual's browser. (Standard html does have tags like 'load me first').

Most web browsers like to see completed tables (more like complete page layouts) prior to populating your screen with data and images. Once a page or table layout is completed, images tend to be the last items populated, with text being the first.

Maybe Dennis can shed some insight into the download size in the typical advertisments - and I would guess your T1 should handle them in mere seconds. Hence, I'm wondering if you're having issue with any other web pages - possibly an issue with your PC?

Flash advertisemtn tend to do funny things is some web browsers. There was a time when I couldn't close a web page until the flash advert. completed...

The ads are probably links to other, faster servers so they are served up faster than the content can be delivered by the TP servers.

Ken
**********************************************************

You got it backwards Jason. I get all the adverts almost instantaneously. It's the forum body and text that takes so much longer to load. I know ad-free forums are few and far between. So I'm not asking for the adds to disappear. I'd just prefer to see the actual forum load, the adds can follow at their leisure.

This activity is not browser-dependent either. Same annoying page load sequence whether I use MSIE6 or FF2

//greg//

***************************************************

Well, mine's satellite too; 256 up/1500 down. T1 is 1544, hence my use of the word "equivalent". Since my first post though, the time lag between advertising graphics loading and TractorPoint forum/text loading is now less noticeable. Maybe Dennis is doing some tweaking.

//greg//

***************************************************

Over the last few days TP has failed to open for me a few times. Have no idea if TP was at fault at all for one or two of those times turned out to be IP problem but it seems TP would fail to open when another site would open.
This morning it was very fast for me. kt

***************************************************

I am on dailup and I have noticed a tremendously longer load up time in the past few months. Not sure if it is my ISP or something else.

//Chief//

***************************************************

I agree that it has gotten slower in the past 6-12 months. Advertising naturally comes in first. Several times a week it fails to load for me. I noticed a long time ago that it first seems to load as tractopoint before going to tractorpoint.com.

***************************************************

Ken is right, if you put the cursor over an ad and right click, then select properties, you will see the ads come from a whole different (and presumably much faster) server than does TP itself.

But for the record, I have the same thing here, ads come up, then a second later the rest of the forum.

As of this minute, I am running at 2 mbps download speed, which is pretty typical here.

Best of luck.

Murf

***********************************************************

For what it's worth my page load speed runs between 5 and 8 seconds here. I have DSL but it's only 300K download?

Hi,

I just noticed that loading the site with the Firefox browser is significantly faster than under Internet Explorer.

Anyone else out there with both browsers experience the same thing? ....

I have DSL and on internet explorer, the page loads in about 3 seconds. I don't see much difference in the ads versus the forum load times. I also have the Opera browser and it loads in about 4 seconds. I am also running a 3 gig pentium 4 and 1 gig of ram. I think that helps also. ....

I believe I'm starting to see a pattern Dennis. As usual, 99.99% of the advertising on forum websites is of absolutely no interest to me. So I didn't notice this till now, and I think the problem I'm describing is related to DoubleClick. It seems that the Google-supplied ad files load almost instantaneously, but the DoubleClick-supplied adds (particularly that banner ad that heads the forum text) often take much longer. Last to load is the forum body and text itself - but ONLY after DoubleClick has finished doing it's thing.

This brings me back to the original point, of prioritizing the file loading sequence. Google seems to have a pretty consistently fast ad server, so I'm thinking it may be a matter of getting the DoubleClick ad files to load AFTER the forum body/text - instead of before.

Hi Greg,

Yes today I noticed some real slow loads and I as you said the doubleclick ads are "double" bad as it seems they are also running some extra customer tracking stuff in addition to the content.

The way things are set up, the animated ads which I think are the main culprit, go to static after you visit a "thread", at least that is the way I coded it to work. I think the static ads do not add any load latency.

I have also been looking into a "mobile" phone version of the site that is ad free, I may offer this to "Premium" internet users also.

I am also looking into any options I might have to program some more independence into the page loading.

Dennis ....

OK,

I have a working test that loads the ads hosted on other servers independently.

That is the good news!

Bad news is it is going to take alot of coding so it will take awhile.

Excellent. If there's anything I can do that might make your job easier - let me know.
