Hi Guys, I just took delivery of a 4x6 spring tooth harrow. This is the kind that you can pull in one direction for a radical result and pull it the other for a more modified and also turn it over for smooth, or any combination as it splits in the center for two independent results. I got this mainly for horse pasture work and tried it last night. The critters have punched a lot of holes in the soil and was hoping to smooth them out. I was surprised that the ground was so dry (clay) and I did not get that good of results. Am I expecting too much and do I have to wait for rain to soften the ground some. Just wondering what luck you all had. It does spread the horse pucky piles real well.

Your description sounds more like a chain harrow than a spring tooth harrow.

A bit of moisture also helps. At least it has for me with the soil that I have. With no vegetation growing, the dirt gets about rock hard on the surface. With a bit of moisture, the tines really start to work. It is supposed to rain a bit this weekend; I've been waiting all week to get out there with mine.
