I own a new kubotaL-3240 grande hst tractor. I was told it would handle a 6 ft. rotary mower with no problem. I have read my manual specifications for rotary cutters and it says 770-lb maximum weight for cutters. all the 6 ft cutters i have looked at are alot heavier than that. even the cheap king cutter at tractor supply is 800 lbs. am i missing something or is my tractor to small for a 6 ft cutter. IT would also be my guess that a heavy duty 5 ft cutter would weigh more than 770-lbs. Thank you for any help about this subject.

confused tractor owner in arkansas.

You are running up against that same 2 issues I did when looking for a cutter for my 4410; pto hp and weight of the cutter. These are both fairly similar tractors. Your 3240 with 25 pto hp is going to be working hard to run a 5 ft. cutter in heavy brush.

I wanted a heavy duty cutter but the weight of a 5 ft, hd cutter was a bit more than I wanted to put on the hitch. 5 ft. hd cutters are not a that plentiful due to the small size. Lots of medium duty cutters though. I found a 4ft. hd cutter that had been setting on a dealer lot for almost 3 years and offered $600. He accepted and I was delighted. I got a 4ft. Dragon Products cutter. Its weighs about 662 lbs. according to the owner's manual and a phone call to Dragon. 4 ft. is a little too narrow and a 5 ft. cutter would be ideal. A 5 ft. hd cutter would weigh about another 100 lbs. This would be the max. for my and your tractor. The key to using it with the least amount of issues is to adjust the top center link so it is centered in the pivot link to allow as much movement as possible over uneven ground and to take it SLOW and EASY especially over rough ground that exceeds the center pivot link's capacity to allow travel and NOT allow the link to bottom out hard on the 3 pt. hitch center link which can place huge shock loads on the tractor mounts. ....

My blue 33hp (27 pto) 4x4 has no problem cutting thick wet weeds and brush as tall as 6'. It's a KK and heavy. I use it commerically and can cut trees 4" thick and turn them into mulch easily. A hydraulic top link and specially made 5/16" cable stays instead of the stiff factory setup allows me to back up to a tree with the back of mower 4 feet off the ground and cut it down while backing. Once down I mulch it in place.

I also can back down into right-of-way ditches and the water's edge of ponds and mow cattails--it taxes the engine when the mower goes under water though, but it's weeks before they grown back. I'm experimenting with devising a mower that will work under water and have a reach of say 10 feet or more--now it's about 6 feet.

Back to the question---I have to use two suitcase weights to keep the front down as under the right conditions with the mower on, it will lift it slightly (mowing ditches and ponds for the most part).

Have you seen the brush cutters that mount on the front? They use a sub frame that carries the mower and uses a very long drive belt that goes under the CUT and up through a series of pulleys up to the PTO. ....

I think the 3240 would lift and carry a 6' mower just fine (you may need front weights for the heavier cutters if you don't have a front end loader on).
But 25 PTO HP may not be enough to run a 6' cutter in thick/heavy grass or brush.
I run a 6' King Kutter brush mower on my Kioti DK 35 w/28.5 PTO HP. It handles the cutter fine, but it can sometimes use all the HP I've got in thick, high grass. ....

EW; Is OSHA going to require you to furnish hard hats for the fish in the pond where you are cutting underwater? Really I'm not laughing at your idea, they kind of chuckled at Henry Ford too, but he did OK. Have a big day. Frank. ....

I agree that a 25hp machine is going to be taxed running a 6' cutter unless you really stay on top of things. It may be diferent in Arizona, but up here the first cut of the season would take everything a 40hp machine could put out at times.

As was stated, you may need some front weights or some sand in the FEL bucket to keep the nose safely weighted though.

You could also look into a flail-style mower for your machine, they are both lighter and require less ponys to run, but they are nmore spendy.

Jeff, we've been cutting under water for years, no problem, no overload either. Just use an old-style sicle-bar style hay mower, the reciprocating cutters don't care if they are above or below water and cut the weeds cleanly and dont leave a mulch floating behind you, just full-length stems which can easily be raked ashore.

Best of luck. ....

I tried a flail mower on my small Kubota about same size and liked it very much. Liked the offset to it. Only problem I found was turning with it was not as easy as the rotary mower due to roller on rear. Other than that I really like it more than the rotary cutter and agree with Murf they are easier on weight and HP requirements. As to the weight limit, much of the rotary cutter's weight is on the trail wheel.

EW, not sure I understand your backing up on the tree but if you are...be sure something limits the up motion of your cutter as you can jam the PTO shaft damaging your tractor (experience). kt ....

Since I made a quick attach plate for my implements sort of like a skid steer's, I had to extend the PTO shaft about 6". For some reason the angles and the added shaft length have never been a binding problem. Granted, I can't cut mokre than about 8" lower than the CUT but that's not really a problem since as I'm backing down the ditchbank.

Murf I like the idea of sickle bar. I'd like to find one and put a hydraulic motor on it and suspend it from a boom to get more reach.

Any body got one in the Detroit area? If it's in Canada eh, I'd need a passport which I don't have. ....

Jeff, no passport required, we'll glad accept your money, errr, I mean let you in, without a passport, but you have to drive in, just have your birth certificate or social insurance card and your drivers licence and you're good to go!!

In most cases they don't want to see anything but a drivers licence.

If you're serious about an old side bar cutter, just let me know, they are super easy to extend outwards, no boom required, just extra belts and some steel welded up.

Best of luck. ....
