Hey ya'll, sorry I have been away for awhile, had computer problems along with others but think we may be seeing the light!
Been looking for a 12" coulter for my Fergason/sherman 2 bottom mold board plow? I can not find it anywhere new? Used to be able to get em at my local ag store (farm and fleet but it seems they are more FLEET now than AG LOL.
Any help would be greatly appreciated
Thanks again ahead of time

Many of them are basically all the same from one make to another to a degree. The clamps are about the same as the bulk of all the shafts were the same diameter from one make to another. ....

Art
Thanks for replying, The coulter I have on it is a 12". Can I replace with a larger one? I have found 16" and larger at TSC BUT I can not find any place that sells new ones that are in the 12" range. Can you thin (off hand) where I may look to find new ones?
Today, I finished up the new bushings that they ride on BUT I still can not find the right size coulter. Would using a 4" dia. larger coulter screw up the angle I would need to plow with this small a set up?
Anyone here spend a half a life using the small equipment and can give me some insight? I would think that using a larger coulter would not be the best set up?
What burns me is that untill the price of steel went bannana's, I could find them at just about any fam and barn sore.
Thanks ....

Broken; Check the clearance as to whether a larger colter diamater would fit under the frame of your plow. It needs to have room to swing side to side without hitting the plow frame or the plow bottom it's self. Usually larger was better because of keeping the hub of the coulter higher above soil surface while maintaining adequate cuting depth lets the trash go under the couter to be cut rather than push it ahead of the coulter. Best of luck. Frank. ....

Full size plows usually had 16" diameter coulters. Compact single and double bottoms have a 12". I doubt that you have enough throat height to clear the larger coulter. Forgot the brand of mine. Will check it out later today maybe you can purchase one from them. Also try "ab-eagleline.com." I found them on the web. They make small plows for compacts and say coulters are optional on their plows. They are out of Tennessee.

You can't repair the existing one by replacing bearings or welding up a crack in the bearing housing? ....

If it is just the blade that you need we'd need to know the center hole diameter or if it's square the measurements of it.
There still are manufacturers of smaller blades but I'd need to know more to start with.
For the most parts not getting into the coulters to much but on newer plows they actually were 22" blades on our high clearence plows with spring cushions for field obstructions. ....

The coulter is 1/8" thick.
It has a 1.905" dia center hole that is round.
It has three mounting holes that are .330" diameter and 120 degrees apart on a 2 3/4" dia bolt hole circle.

The old coulter was lost in action as it split in half somewhere out in the fields, so fixing it is out of the question.

I will check on the clerarance's.
Thank all! ....

I was talking from memory and it isn't so good any more. Both my plows have 16" coulters. My little plow is a Pittsburgh, don't know if that will help.

I have (3) older (Antiques) coulter discs laying around. A 16" round, 14 1/4" fluted and a 17" fluted.

The hole size you mention seems large while mine seem to have a 3 1/2" mounting bolt pattern.

If you have trouble finding what you need, I could always alter one on our waterjet machine to your specifications. Flute shapes are always different. ....

So far found a 17" that measures right for you but I think it's mainly in metric as it is from a Kneverland plow. I don't think you want to know the price, were still looking. We have from time to time modified the center holes a bit with a torch(we know) on light duty use and had good results. ....

You guys are the best, thanks. Looks like I have clearance for a 16" coulter. This would only gove me a 1/2" clearance though from the swivel point? Maybe that too close??????
Anyways, take your time looking, I wont be able to take my plow back up to the land this next weekend. My transmision finally gave in on my chevy (170K) I will have to take the spare mini van LOL. ....

Broken: When you measured for the size coulter you have clearance for did you take into account for any "slop" in the swivel joints that may allow the coulter to push up against the plow frame when you drop it in the ground? Frank. ....

Agri Supply lists Coulters from 14" to 36". Give them a call at 1-800-345-0169. They will advise on availability and price. ....

Thank you gator, I will check them out.
Frank
No I did not and that is a good point. I did make new bearings for it so there should be min. of slop BUT, (if I am thinking about what you mean) that will come eventually.
I suppose a 14" would be the largest I should go with (if I can even find that)
It just amazing at how many parts for old tractors are out there readily available and how hard it is to find such a small thing like a coulter? ....

Agri-supply had one that I could fabricate to fit but, they were out of stock. Thanks Gater for the tip.

Anyone here know of anywhere else???
One would think that some where is this world, a chineese company (or what ever) would make an aftermarket coulter for a 1939 ferguson 2 bottom plow , 12B, 5252 is the numbers on it.
Any help would be great?
Thanks ....

Many of the new machines that I see today are running the bolt on type. Do you have enough room on the hub to drill it? ....

Broken Arrow, Agri Supply has a few retail stores and could have it in stock at one of those. The toll free number Gator gave you should be able to check inventory at those but probably would only if you asked them to. They have a fair web site Agri-Supply.com.

From some one who has never handled a coulter, could you not find one with the id you need and have it cut down on the OD?

Another question, in my part of the world I have used a couple of different brands of bottom plows and never seen a coulter on the smaller plows. Here they disk or burn first if need be. kt ....

Im over my tantrum I threw when I found out they were back ordered.
Yes, I will have to fabricate the coulter. I may just make new center bearings to hold a standard coulter, more work, but If I ever need to replace, it will be easier.
Thanks for your advice ....

For parts it's a matter of turns. If they only sell five a year I'd lay odds on you'd better hope to find a shortline company or the chinese to build it.
On many parts in most industries after the products use starts falling and the parts demand also does and that is the problem with this part. We often build or modify to suit the customer and the machine. Even if the machine is made in america doesn't seem to make much difference. Being in buisness for 60 plus years I can think of a lot of shortline brands and tractors that used to be around and at the time household names in the farming communtity that have become unknown at this point. ....

Since I had more time on myhands than I figured I would, I ordered the closest match I could find from Agri-supply.
Made in Brazil, and maybe (1/2) as hard as it should be BUT I opened up the center hole and elongated the bolt holes (lucky they were real close) and Whalaaa, I have two new coulters with one as a spare. If it holds up, I will buy two more as long term extra's since they were only $6.99 (or so). I just greased it using the the new zerks and will be plowing this week. I need to get the corn in fast as farmers around here already have had theirs in for a week! ....
