Guys, I was plowing snow this weekend with my B2150, using a FEL and BB. I have turf tires all around and occaionaly I would get bogged down and have to push down on the differntial lock pedal. When I did this sometimes I would hear a clunking coming form under the seat. What the heck is causing this, worn parts or what?

You are hearing the noise of it either engaging or disengaging.
If you use the diff. lock you need to be sure you engage it and disegage it properly. Not sure on your tractor but some require a full stop to engage or disengage. Have had to reverse direction just a little to release the differential lock. kt

Well I guess I don't know the proper way of engaging. On my tractor there is a lever behing my right foot to push down and it seems that I have to hold it down for it to work, but perhaps that's not true. When I hold it down the right wheel engages and that's when I hear the clunking sometimes and seems when I let up it stops turning the wheel. Am I doing this wrong? Do I not have to hold it down,and if so how do I disengage? ....

Typically, you will hear some snapping and cracking sounds if the differential lock is engaged and you are doing some turning. It should only be locked when going straight.
What feels like it needs to be continually stepped on to keep it engaged, could still be engaged and not releasing. I don't use mine frequently and the shaft passing through a pilot bushing where you step on it gets rusty keeping it engaged. It then needs to be either oiled or greased so it moves freely. Disassembly may be necessary. I don't have your model of tractor but all designs appear to be similar from what I've seen. ....

Thanks for the help, if it ever warms up hear in upstate NY I will have to take a closer look and see exactly what is happening. I also don't use it very often.

Be very careful when engaging the diff. lock. Engaging it while one tire is spinning with any degree of speed or high speed can damage the diff. lock. Best to observe when a tire is slipping and ease off the throttle to bring the tire slip to a very slow movement and gently apply heel pressure to the diff. lock pedal. You will feel the pedal drop down slightly when it engages. The diff. lock may not or may have problems engaging if there is no tire slippage. Once engaged, remove you heel from the diff. lock pedal so it can automatically disengage. Not a good idea to manually hold the diff. lock engaged as this puts a lot of strain on the axles and diff. during turns. ....

It wont engage if both wheels are going the same speed. When you hold it down you will feel a little extra pedal movement as it engages. . You also must NOT use it when turning ....

To say "must NOT use..." is a little too strong of wording in my opinion.
It doesn't hurt anything to have it engaged while turning to any degree so long as there is a little tire slippage; at the very least you'll have reduced steerablity (it will want to go straight if the front have lost grip/traction). I've been in situations where I have had to turn and have it locked to get out of a bad spot. However, that said, it should be noted that locking and turning on pavement CAN hurt something (if only wearing the tires), and is not advisable.
While the locking diff is good for certain conditions, the cutting brakes are also good for tight spots, like side-hilling or in a rut.

I have a BX 23 and I have used the lock and my clunks in and out, I know you have to have ground that is loose so the tires will give, or you will be hearing a lot my than a clunking sound. Snap crackle pop. ....
