I don't see anything on this board relating to notification of public utilites prior to digging, as required in every state as far as I know. Here in CT we have to call Call-Before-You-Dig two working days before moving any earth with powered equipment. I know that other states have a similar Dig-Safe requirement. Do all of you folks actually call before pulling a stump or augering a post hole on your own property?

Darryl, in most cases I think people know where the underground utilities (if there are any) are on their own property. The most common being water service, and sewer, both of which are usually clear of any major earth-work undertaken by a homeowner. ....

In N.Carolina if you cut a telephone cable you are more than likely to be charged for the repair. If they mark the telephone cable with an orange paint mark, they have a 30 inch leeway on either side of the mark. So if you are digging two feet from their mark and you hit the cable, you will probably be responsible for repairs. Phone companies are usually pretty lienient with individual drops to the house, but the main lines are a different story. I have worked telephone cable repair and have seen many cables cut where I would not expect cables to be. Some are buried three feet deep and others I have seen buried only six inches. I have repaired cables that were cut while digging the footing for a new house and the cable remained under the foundation of the garage. Just be careful and If you think their could be cables in the area call before you dig, could save you some money. My two cents. ....

Here in california we just call Dig-Alert and they will come out and mark the utilities that are of record but they cannot mark the 12" irrigation lines or sprinkler lines that are are my property so I have to be carefull when I do any excavation ....

If you have a farm out in the middle of nowhere and once you notify the authorities about digging with powered equipment, and they reply that there is no underground utitlty on your property does that mean that you still have to inform the Big Brother before digging then I think thats a stupid law.
