OK, I feel that all of the discussion about lawn tractors is forgetting the obvious and that is the average owner of these tractors(?) owns less than a 1/4 acre lot with a driveway to match...I see them all the time (and chuckle). So sure, pay $2000 - $4000 for a tractor(?) with stamped steel axles, 6 watt automotive headlights and B&S air cooled engines...why not? So an MTD tractor(?) for $3000 lasts you 10 years, thats only $300/yr...a bargain, if your in the same residence after 10 yrs.. The (MTD's) aren't designed to last decades, nor does the average consumer want to keep an old lawn tractor. It would be like holding onto a Chrysler K-car or Ford Tempo...why? ....

Bloggins, I agree about the average homeowner not needing to spend too much on a lawn tractor. I think the average homeowner can spend around $2,000 and get a lawnmower that will have many years of good service. A buddy of mine is very happy with a 15hp Husqvarna XP with 42" mower he just bought. I wish I followed my own advice. I payed lots more for this JD LT190. Its a great mower but that's it. If I didn't have the Gravely I would have bought something with a heavier frame and the ability to pull some weight.

Ibrown
There are 4 big players, Murray, MTD and Electrolux.
Murray sells to Walmart so?
MTD with the brand range from Club Cadet down.
Electrolux with Husky and Poulan.
John Deere

If you are just cutting lawn the zero turn have a better selection of quality manufactures as they also supply the commercial cutters.

In garden tractors other than the big 4 there is Simplicity, Ingersol and Saukville Tractor. There maybe more others can add, but this is all I know of. Saukville is a really a market garden tractor and the price and weight is more comparable to a compact tractor. Ingersol is the only one built like the old Club Cadets that I know of. Simplicity is somewhere in between. Snapper is selling the Simplicity tractors as it is part of Agco. MF sells the subcompact Simplicity.
If you want something completely off beat you can go with the Electric Ox. I have no idea how it compares in the price of a regular lawn tractor. ....

In Garden Tractors I think you can still add the Toro Wheelhorse to that list. My old Wheel Horse really held its value got about 33% of its original cost when I sold it after 21 years. ....

Dennis; I think Toro still makes most of the line. I was told a few years back by a dealer that they made everything. I suspect the low end they have given up to MTD, while retaining the more expensive lower volume tractors. ....

bloggins
----->>
Why did I ask the question! Because if the Toros at the Toro dealers are no different than any of the Brands/Models at the Box Stores why pay twice as much as the box store price for the same tractor at a Toro dealer? ? ?
