My boss's Case/IH 235 (I think) with diesel engine quit, ran intermittently for a bit, and now won't start.

Not very good with diesels. Where do I start looking?

Thanks,
Bill

Fuel filter first, well maybe fuel first, but suppose you already checked that. Make sure the sediment filter isn't clogged.

Make sure the electric shut-off selenoid is operating properly. Make sure it isn't blocking the fuel flow.

From there, fuel injection system. Need to pressure check the pump. If the pump can't overcome the compression pressure, no fuel will be injected into the combustion, or pre-combustion, chamber. Unlike a gas engine, the fuel in a diesel is injected during the compression cycle. Depending on the type of diesel engine (direct or indirect injection), the pressure can be pretty high.

These would be a couple of first checks. ....

Fuel and filter are in the process of being checked.

Shut-off solenoid...that is a good one. I always wondered what stopped a diesel when you turn the key off.

If we get as far as the injector pump, we'll probably take it to a shop.

Thanks,

Bill ....

Bill, it depends on how you define "intermittent" too.

When it cut out was it a sudden on / off like a switch being moved, or a fade out, fade in like it was starving for fuel?

It could be that the wiring to the shut off relay has an issue. But also check the manual shut off, usually a cable pull like a choke, likely with a red handle on the lower dash, if it has been unused for some time, and then somebody pulled it out and pushed it back in, the cable could be sticky enough to stay right on the edge of run / no run. It would then do *exactly* what you describe.

You might want to find the manual shut off, run the cable back to the pump, and verify that the little lever on the pump side is in the fully closed position. Likewise, either disable or remove the electric shut-off, this will eliminate them as possibles.

Best of luck. ....

Was there water or junk in the filter bowl? My blue has had a few tanks of water-logged fuel---it will sound like it's running on 2 of 3 cylinders, then lose power, and finally quit. ....

Apparently no water or sediment in the bowl. The filter hasn't been changed in at least three or four years though, so we are getting a new one.

If we figure it out, I'll post about it. Thanks for the suggestions.

Also check air filter and intake system for such as insect nest. Anything to restrict the air flow. If fuel filter had not been changed in a while, the air filter probably needs it also. ....

Update: After changing the fuel filter and following the factory recommended 3-step bleeding procedure, the tractor started and ran for about 1-1/2 hours. Then it quit again and did the same thing...it will start immediately and run for about 10 seconds.

The owner is convinced it is heat related. I'm leaning toward contaminated fuel, or the fuel shut off solenoid. He is out of town this weekend, maybe we'll find out more this coming week.

Thanks,
Bill ....

Two things: If it is heat-related, that's easy to diagnose: As soon as it quits, run cool water from a garden hose over the engine and radiator. It start and run after it cools.

Has anyone recently added an electrical accessory like a halogen beacon, work light, fan, etc. that could be heating up the ignition switch internals?

Sounds like contaminated fuel to me because that's about how long it takes mine to bog down. And it only takes a little water to prevent running. ....

An hour and a half is a long time for it to be heat related. The tractor is at operating temperature within 10 minutes, so that would be down the list a little first. With a diesel, if it is running too hot, you would probably know it.

I would stick with the fuel and shut-off solenoid first. One changing of the fuel filter isn't a sure thing. You may have to repeat the process. Also make sure fuel is getting to the filter. There could be a restiction at the tank.

The breather cap at the tank is another strong possibility. Once the vacuum formed in the tank, it would explain the 10 second run time. If the breather is blocked, that vaccum could take some time to form, then would restrict the fuel flow to the engine until the tractor sat long enough for the vacuum to leak off. Try running the tractor without the fuel fill cap on. Easy enough to test. ....
