I am looking for a new or slightly used tractor. Is Yanmar ok? They seem so cheap. Are they a cheap tractor or will they last like Fords, Massey's, etc? Are there any special problems common to Yanmar owners?

They are dandy tractors. Easily as well built as the best of the imports...Quality has never been a question. They are cheap because they are imported used - not available new - and do not have official factory sanction in this country. They are "gray market", which means that they are trade-ins by some oriental farmer. For some reason, those farmers tend to trade in at very low hours. Is this societal? Nobody seems to know. But because of this, you should feel confident in your basic mechanical abilities before buying one. Not that you will need to do anything, but why worry? Parts are available via email or phone and seem to be easily available...but again, it is up to you to order what you may need. Service manuals and parts books are available as well. If you are a techno-geek type of mechanic, you will be interested in many of the features on the Yanmars which are not available on US imported tractors. Yanmar is a very big company. Their products are often innovative and always top notch for quality (typical Japanese!), but compact tractors are not their main product. I like Yanmars irrespective of the low price. But gray market is not everyone's dish. If you want a dealer recommendation, email me.
I should mention that not all Yanmars are gray market. Some models were sold in this country by official dealers until the late 1980's. These tractors are called the "US models" are NOT cheap. In fact, the US models are somewhat more expensive than other compacts of the period.

As others indicated, Yanmar tractors are very good quality. Most sold in US today are imported from Japan, typically with less than 1000 hrs. They are available from 15 to at least 40 hp, 4wd, and what has been called a power-shift transmission. Multiple gear ranges with 3 forward, neutral, and 1 reverse for each range. Gear shifting within a range can be done without clutching - the tranmsission has an automatically actuated clutch and I believe synchronized gears. This is the "next best thing to hydrostatic". Yanmar tractors used to be sold in the US by Yanmar dealers - most of which continue to provide parts and service today. Technical manuals are a necessity so that parts can be ordered by part number rather than tractor model. Most of the US Yanmar dealers will be happy to get parts for you. Many may even be willing to repair a tractor for you. For more information, follow the link I have provided.

What Jim claims was once true. Yanmar used to make John Deere compacts. Today, my understanding is that only the JD 4100 (20hp) is made entirely by Yanmar. The other JD compacts still use Yanmar engines and probably many other Yanmar parts but are actually assembled here in the US. ....
